Marriage certificate for a widow who remarries
« on: Friday 02 October 09 18:26 BST (UK) »
Hi,

If a widow remarries, what name does she use and more importantly which name is recorded on the BMD  - her original maiden name or the surname from her first marriage.  Also if I order a marriage certificate, will the brides name reflect the first marriage, i.e., Jane Jones, previously Smith, formerly Brown, for instance.

I want to know how I can link the widow with her first marriage if you know what I mean.  I think I could do this with the birth certificates if both marriages produced children but in the case I am looking at there were no children from the second marriage.

Thanks,

Luzzu

She would usually remarry under her married name.   Depending on what year you are searching - it may possibly show her maiden name but I think that may be on more modern marriages

However - her fathers name should be on the certificate so that will give you her maiden surname

Hi,
In all the cases I've found, the remarriage is indexed under her first married surname.

Where children have been born to a second marriage after 1911 though, the mothers maiden name is recorded on the index as her birth surname (not surname from her first marriage.)

Oh dear  :-\.

The marriage certificate I was thinking of ordering is indexed in the maiden name and was sure I was on the right track as I had found a likely death and an entry in the 1881 census.

What to do next  ??? ???

Thanks for putting me right.

Hi, last married name is usually the way but I have one ancestor who very thoughtfully, from my point of view, reverted to her maiden name for her second marriage - thanks Charlotte  ;D

Hi,

That is good to know.  May be it would be worth risking £7.00 and I could reference check because I do know her father's name.

My lady can't have just disappeared after the death of her first husband and there is no record of a remarriage or death in her first married name.  It was between 1870 and 1880 and they didn't always do things as they should.

A leap of faith I think and if it comes good it will be the final piece of the jigsaw.

 :D

I have seen one who remarried - under her married name - but her maiden name was also recorded - now I call that thoughtful!  That recorder should win a prize!!   ;)
