Rugby St Andrews - marriage

I wonder if anyone has the disc of BMD for Rugby St Andrews ?

On 8th Feb 1771, James Gibbs married Ann Watson in this church. There are no records of their births on the IGI and indeed few Gibbs/Watsons around this period for the locality, so I was hoping  the parish record of their marriage might show that they were from a different parish...

I have the disc from the Rugby History Society but I'm afraid it shows no more details for the maariage than the ones you already have. It is a transcription.

Thank you for your reply. When you say that the disc you have shows no more info than I had already (from the IGI) do you mean only in this case? Or do other records sometimes show parishes, occupations of the grooms, or other snippets? I've thought of buying these discs but unless they show more than the IGI it hardly seems worth it.

One thing your disc did reveal though, was that James Gibbs died in 1784 - and I didn't know that - I'd assumed he'd lived his normal span. His widow Ann would've been left with the children to raise on her own, and so I wondered if she'd married again - the IGI shows an Ann Gibbs marrying a William Landon at St Andrews in 1789. Would you mind checking your disc again to see by any chance whether the said Ann was described as a widow?

Sorry, no more detail about the 1789 marriage on the disc. Up to 1813 you get just names of the couple. Between 1813 - 1837 you get witnesses as well. From 1837 the details are as per marriage certificates.

The info on the disc must be edited because by 1789 the parishes were using a proforma register which showed where the bride and groom were living when they got married and witnesses but not fathers.

Sometimes there is some extra info depending on the priest eg on one original entry from Bourton on Dunsmore registers in 1772 it has ages as well (I got this from filmed copies of registers held at Rugby Library when I visited earlier this year). It is very hit and miss, I have seen marital status entered on other early records including Banns registers.

If you can get to an LDS centre it would be worth your while to look at copies of the originals but no guarantees. The amount of detail on the discs you can buy does vary according to where you get them from but on the whole I find them useful because coverage of the IGI can be patchy.

PS- out of interest just had a look at the disc for Hillmorton, also from Rugby FHS and it looks to be a full transcription of the registers. So it goes to show that the transcription policy  can vary within organisations as well!

Thank you again for looking up your disc. I'll have to book a session at the LDS centre, or perhaps go direct to Rugby library, where, according to the Warwickshire Pink Pages, a copy of the registers for St Andrew's
is held.

I suspect you have already confirmed Ann married twice after the death of Gibbs, first to William Landon, then to James Collis - a John Collis was a witness at her Wedding to James Gibbs.
