Fozard Dewsbury Vital Records etc
« on: Sunday 06 March 05 21:40 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor Thomas Fozard is shown on the 1841 census residing at Upper Streetside Ossett and it looks as if he was born around 1819. It also looks (from LDS) as if he married a Hannah Jagger. Beyond this I'm stuck. Can anyone trace him e.g. in Vital Records Index or Dewsbury Parish records? I have seen a reference to marriage banns in Dewsbury in 1839 but can't trace a marriege on FreeBMD.

Thanks Andy. I was hoping to look back earlier than 1841 but instead you've come up with a completely new possibility i.e. that Thomas and Hannah had 2 younger boys of whom I was unaware! The rest of the family could well have moved out by 1871 - I know from 1841 and 1851 that they had my ancestor Josiah plus Harriet and Maria(possibly Hannah Maria who died in 1856). It would be interesting to see who appears in this household on the 1861 census. I'll be able to follow up on Benjamin and James now anyway - don't suppose you're able to send the oroginal image?

Hi,
I'm also checking out this line and re-examining the likelihood of Thomas being the George Thomas Fozard b.1818 with parents John and Sarah Scott, I'm not convinced as there are a few oddities, i.e. two sons called George, when the first is still alive and well and later married with his own family!
After ages searching everything I can think of I've got two possible sets of parents for this Thomas;
Thomas Fozard- parents John b.1799 and Ruth Varey/Varley b.1800 who marry on 25th Dec 1822 at Woodkirk, Yorks but their son Thomas is christened in 1825 (?born years earlier)and according to one personal site, if correct, marries a Lydia ?Fothergill and has a family-'our' Thomas is married for life to Hannah Jagger.
Next Thomas Fozard has parents John and Elizabeth Blakey who marry 4th dec 1820 at St Peters, Leeds, I think they are the most likely, but I can't find anything else out about them, they seem to disappear, but maybe noone has followed this line of Fozards specifically before us!
Have you looked into these people before and do you have any info you could share?.....please. Any help would be great. Thanks and best wishes.

Hi Lindyloo,

Thomas married Hannah Jagger 4/8/1839 at All Saint's, Dewsbury. Thomas, a Clothier, stated as 'full age' and Hannah, Spinster, as 'minor'.

Thomas's father was John a Clothier. Hannah's father was George also a Clothier.

One of the witnesses was Joseph Fozard who made his mark 'x'

The Thomas you mention baptised 25/12/1825 was born on 22/11/1825 so I think you can rule that one out.

Further info.. The John who married 4/12/1820 was stated as being a Joiner so I doubt he would have swapped professions to become a Clothier.

Hi Ian,
Thanks for responding so quickly and for the information,  thats really kind of you and very useful as it cuts out an avenue and now I know 'my' Thomas is not the son of John and Ruth Varey/Varley.
Being a bit cheeky....You don't happen to know anything about the other possible couple John and Elizabeth Blakey and their son Thomas do you?
Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated.
Best wishes, Lyn

Hi Lyn,

I don't think I can help you much further with John. On the 1841 census John the Joiner married in Leeds appears to be still living in Leeds and his son Thomas is a Joiners Apprentice.

There is a John married to Phebe who works in the Woollen industry living at Batley Carr which isn't far from Ossett. All other John's look to be too young to have had a son of 'full age' when Thomas got married.

Sorry,

Ian

Just looked at the other West Yorkshire board and note you now have the record of John & Phoebe.
