I have found Arthur Major b.1870 marriage to a Sarah Ellen Hockenhull Jun1890
Natwich, Cheshire 8a 549

That is looking like an essential purchase :-) to find Arthur's parents and to determine if Elizabeth is his sister that looks probable?

Going off Dotty's info I have found the following on the 1881 census please post your thoughts:
RG number: RG11      Piece: 3544      Folio:  92      Page:  24
Cant read the address in Haslington

Elizabeth Major   Wife   Married    F   40   1841   Warburton , Cheshire

Arthur Major   Son   Single    M   12   1869   Scholar Haslington, Cheshire

Hi,

When you can`t find what you are looking by the usual means you can use an asterisk * in place of any letters.  You can search for Jos* Ma*or, born Hasli*ton or *oseph *a*or  born Haslington etc. etc.

Found it before your post Dotty, but thank you xxxx.

I have gone on to find Ann with Thomas and her three sons
Thomas 1869 Haslington
John 1873 Haslington
and Fredrick 1876 Haslington.

I have also found a marriage of Joseph and Elizabeth who later went on to marry Thomas Bateman.
Marriages Dec 1863

Major    Joseph                Altrincham    8a   253
Richardson    Elizabeth        Altrincham    8a   253

I am struggling to find out why Elizabeth remarried the husband of her sister-in-law did Ann Major die? I cant find her death?

Marriages Mar 1889   (>99%)
Bateman    Thomas        Nantwich    8a   425
Major    Elizabeth        Nantwich    8a   425

I wonder why she kept the major name rather than using her maiden name? Is this usual?

In 1891
RG number: RG12      Piece: 2854      Folio:  11      Page:  17
School Lane, Haslington

Thomas Bateman   Head   Married            M   42   1849   Chemical Labourer Hassall, Cheshire
Elizabeth Bateman   Wife   Married            F   48   1843   Warburton, Cheshire
Rhoda Major           Daughter   Single    F   17   1874   Domestic Servant Haslington, Cheshire
William   Major        Stepson   Single    M   23   1868   Labourer In Railway Works Haslington, Cheshire
Frederic Bateman   Son                       M   14   1877   Farm Servant Haslington, Cheshire

Elizabeth is living with Thomas and her two children (Joseph) William Major and Rhoda Major from her first marriage to Joseph and Frederic Bateman youngest and third child of Thomas's first wife Ann Major (sister of Joseph).

The children were therefore cousins and then step brothers/sisters...LOL! Very weird...wouldn't you agree?
