Winlaton
« on: Tuesday 29 September 09 22:22 BST (UK) »
Hello, I wonder if anyone can help me to find a record.
I have found the Durham Bishops Transcripts invaluable for some of my research.
However, the Winlaton records on this site only go from 1833 - 1850.
Does anyone know where I can find earlier records?
The Transcripts can go from 1700. Was Winlaton included in another parish's records before 1833?
I am looking for Ann Nixon born c 1772 - aiming to be able to name her parents.
Thanks
Liz

Winlaton formed part of the parish of Ryton Holy Cross until 1828 - see the invaluable Durham Records Office Parish Index  http://www.rootschat.com/links/076x/  This gives a fairly comprehensive list of Durham place-names and which parishes they formed part of - well worth bookmarking.

Hi All

Not sure if you have come across this but you can download a transcript of the marriages at Ryton 1581-1812.
Its free to download. Best to download the PDF format then you can search the contents, lots of Nixons listed.
http://www.archive.org/details/theregistersofry00ryto.

There are lots of other free books on this site. Finding them is another matter  ;D.

YES! Rootschat has turned up trumps again!
Thank you all for your help.
Barbara, was the site Gary gave me where you found them?
I'm going to try to track down Cuthbert & Joanna, now.
Funnily enough, some of my Craigs in Northumberland were mistranscribed as Craggs.  I wonder. . . . . .

I reckon genealogy's like peeling a gigantic onion, layer by layer - it's thrilling when another one comes off.

Hi Liz

Births are not there yet. It looks like an on going process. I check in on a regular basis, to regular my missus reckons  ;D I will let you know if anything else of interest appears. It is worth searching the site as there loads of free books to download, in particular a history of northumberland in no fewer than 11 volumes. I can't stop reading them.

Thanks, Gary, I'll be interested to look at them.
I'm sure my roots are still in Northumberland, although it seems a lot of them were Scottish, and now several in Durham - but I suppose that was part of the Old Northumbria.
(My Dad, bless him, an ardent Newcastle United Supporter in the days of the Charletons, & therefore a bit anti Sunderland because of football rivalry, didn't think much of anyone from over the River Tyne. I wonder what he'd say now!)
