'Christian' as forename - Marriage in Weyms 1732
« on: Tuesday 29 September 09 17:43 BST (UK) »
I have been researching the marriage of George Robertson and Margaret Cockburn in 'Wemys', Fife whose first child, Charles, was born 28/9/1733.  The only marriage I can find is between George Robertson and 'Christian' Cockburn on 15/12/1732.  On the same page of the register of about 10 marriages, there are 3 other brides called 'Christian'.  Does anyone know whether this was a legitimate forename and, if not, why this forename was used?  Could this be the marriage I'm looking for?

Hello Kit,

Christian was a very popular/common name - just as popular as Margaret, Janet etc.

I believe it was inter-changeable with Christina but in my own personal research, it's either been one or the other.

Anne

Hi Anne,

Thanks for your reply.  I really had hoped that it could be my Margaret, although I'm not giving up hope yet!  Kit

Hiya,

very popular in Wester Ross,... Gaelic form of the name was "Ciorstaig", so also watch for variants "Chirsty", "Christy", and "Tina".

Donald.

(son of Donald, son of Ross, son of Christina)
Primarly Coigach, but also other parts of Ross and Cromarty.

Thanks for all your responses.  Looks like I'm onto a loser with Margaret then. Kit
