Birth/Baptism/Death Info Questions..pls
« on: Tuesday 29 September 09 06:20 BST (UK) »
Pls excuse my dumb question but, what is the difference between the information which is found on a Baptism entry in Parish records and that found on birth certificate?? Is looking for the Baptism entry going to give me any more information that already found on a birth certificate?

I have  birth cert for my G grandmother - Sarah Ann Hyde which tell me the date, 1857, the registration district is Chapel-en-le-frith, sub-district of Buxton in the county of Derby. If I was to look for the entry of here Baptism which records office/Parish would I go to to find this enry?? Her place of birth on the census records is listed as in the civil parish of Fairfield.......even in the 1861 census it tells me she was born in the civil parish of Fairfield??? Where does Chapel-en-le-frith come in??

Also, I have located the death entry for Sarah Ann Hyde in 1928 age 71, place of even Buxton. reg office 395, reg entry BD/26/040. How and where would I look for the place she is actually buried??

I would appreciate any help.

Regards.

Lindsay

Hi

Chapel-en-le-Frith was the registration district in which the birth was registered. The link below shows the area it covered. As you see it covers a number of towns or civil parishes.

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/chapel-en-le-frith.html

Her death was also registered in the Chapel-en-le-Frith Registration District, Buxton is one of the sub districts within the Chapel-en-le-Frith Registration District and it looks like Fairfield is within Buxton sub-district.

Usually the birth certificate has more information than a baptism entry but you would need to check the entry to confirm this.

Hi
If you have the birth certificate already then the baptism entry probably won't add very much. What you can do is look backwards and forwards and see if you can find any brothers or sisters. And I have heard that the vicar sometimes added little notes to the baptismal record but to be honest I don't think that happened very often.

If Sarah Ann was born and lived in Fairfield then (assuming she was C of E) her church records would most likely be the ones for St Peter's - see http://www.genuki.org.uk:8080/big/eng/DBY/Fairfield/index.html
They seem to be on microfilm at Derbyshire Records Office which is at Matlock - see http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure/record_office/ If you click where it says Our Collection and scroll down you can open a pdf file listing all the parish records which they have. Fairfield is on there and would be the best place to start, if you can get to Matlock.

Some parish records (baptisms and marriages) are included in the IGI which can be searched at http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

There is another way to search the IGI, you can go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/ and choose England, Derby and Fairfield. If you put the surname Hyde in there you will get a few entries including Sarah Ann's baptism where it states the parents. The entries in the IGI don't give address or father's occupation but once you have the date you should be able to find the entry more easily at the records office.

Sarah Ann may have been buried at Fairfield too, if she still lived in the area.

I think Matlock will do look-ups for a fee if you can't get there yourself - or you could ask on here if anyone is going, once you have the date for the baptism/death it should not take long to find the entry and people are very helpful.
