He was not born in Liverpool

How old was he on the marriage cert?

What was his fathers name and occupation

Freebmd only has 2 births for that name - the other was 1908

Births September qtr 1898

Ernest Alfred Tomkins   Islington  1b 359

1901 census for Islington

Edith Emily Tomkins 28 married b Oxfordshire - Oxford
William H   5 b London Westminster
Ernest Alfred   3 b London Islington
Sydney John  1      ditto
Leslie H (Harrismith per freebmd)  5 months   ditto - died 1903
RG13 Piece 188 Folio 18 Page 28

Marriages December qtr 1893

John William Tomkins/Edith Emily Carter  St George Hanover Square  1a 902

A possible birth for his father based solely on the marriage registration district

Births September qtr 1871

John William Tomkins St George Hanover Square  1a 327

The free 1911 index shows the family living in West Derby.  He is mis-spelt as EARNEST Alfred Tomkins b 1899 birthplace London

Father John William is in the household b 1872 London

The 1911 website is strictly pay per view so you need to buy credits to view the full transcription or image

Assuming that date of birth is correct (and obviously, Ernest Alfred didn't register it himself  ;D ), then he may have been registered as Ernest Alfred Hohaus/Hohans in West Derby (part of L'pool) in Jun Q 1897 or as Ernest Alfred Jones in Toxteth Park (also L'pool) in Sept Q 1897.

Could his parents possibly have been unmarried at the time of his birth, only to marry later?  There are a few Tomkins/Jones marriages after 1897.  His parents may have remained unmarried of course, and all just used the name Tomkins.

Hogg - Manchester 19 cent
Anderson - Newcastle mid 19 cent
Boullen - London then Carlisle then Manchester
Comer - Manchester and Galway
