Hi all,

I'm having similar problems trying to find any details on St Peter's Orphanage & Convalescent Home in Kent. I know my ancestor was there due to a census record in 1891 after she lost her parents. However I'd really like to know when she left and general details about her time there.

Has anyone any idea where I can start to find these kind of records should they still exist?

Kind regards

Matt Ellis
Hi mellis5377,
Have you tried the Kent family history soc.
if you go to www.kfhs.org.uk/mfiche2.php?pageno=21

Matt, if you are still looking for information on this could you perhaps provide a little more detail ie. name/age/birhplace/last known residence before being placed in the orphanage?  I ask because it could be that they were transferred there from a Union workhouse which may hold some records.

Hi Casalguidi,

Yes I'dstill be interested in this person. I have since tracked her back to London and her marriage but any addiotnal information during her timein the Orphanages would be welcomed as it may lead to other info on her other siblings.

Name- Emily Blanche Ellis (aka Blanche Ellis)
Birth- 1879
Last known location- St George Hannover, Westminster, London.. I live pretty close London and often pop to the LMA and Westminster Archives, so if you cant help but know of archival documents that may help, please point me in the right direction...

Thanks
Matt Ellis

I too am having probs with an Orphanage in Kent...
But i am talking about the 1930s... I have been in contact with local authority and they have no records.. which i think is wrong!...

My grandmother and her sisters were taken to Cottage homes, Pattens Lane Chatham, Kent... And they were there in 1936, 1 of the girls was taken out of the home to live with extended family... and the other 2 were left in there, And i dont think my gran has forgotten being left in there, or why she was left!...My gran was only 7, so she cant really remember what happened or why!, and she was evacuated during war to wales..
I would love to have her records... And i was so disappointed that they dont exist!

Hi Kelly

These Cottage Homes were part of the local union (workhouse) system and there ARE some records at Medway Archives http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Medway/

Do none of the records/ dates cover what you are looking for?
http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/
Each set of records will need to be searched to see what can be uncovered as it wasn't always, like today, where there were a full set of records for each person but more an entry in the admissions book, an entry in the discharge book etc. etc..  I would say it's definitely worth investigating if you can just to make sure.

Hi,
Thanks for replying, Yes i have been in contact with Medway archive, they only have admissions, which is how i know they went into the home on the 10th Jan 1936...

They have no 'records' on individuals... And Kent archive only have info up to 1930!..

I'm afraid that's quite the norm for workhouse records unless there was some indepth correspondance where they needed to establish parish of settlement etc.. or maybe something in corresponding or guardians minutes files.

A member of our family (born some years later) has recently been told that no (local authority as it was by then) record exists for them.  Due to age differences they were split from their siblings and only learned of blood family nearly 60 years later!!!  It is all very sad :(

Matt

Admission register for West London District School at Ashford (Westminster Board of Guardians Records):

Emily age 7 C of E  admitted 4 Mar 1886.  Father George Thomas in Fulham Road Workhouse (dead)
Dishchaged 28 Sep 1886 to (?) CARROLL of 6 North Street, Dean's Yard, S(?).

Possible siblings ???

Edwin/Edmund age 9 C of E admitted 27 May 1886 father George in Fulham Road Workhouse.  S......? Amelia NEVE 22 St Smith St Westminster.  Discharged 18 Nov 1887? .......... boarded out at Calverton.

With above Edwin/Edmund Thomas G age 5 C of E admitted 27 May 1886 father Thomas in Fulham Road Workhouse (dead).  Discharged 18 Nov 1887 .......... boarded out at Calverton.

I would suggest that it might be worthwhile to scrutinise the Westminster Union/Board of Guardians records to see what else can be picked up for the family especially for the children who would have been the responsibility of the Westminster Union for the time(s) they were in care.
