only found this website when looking for 'the coal hole' in matlock, but thought i should log a comment, i live in the matlock area and my best friend is a 'Hole' and also my dad hails from langley mill.  my husbands grandmother is also a hole.  he has followed his family tree back to 1066 accurately! however not the hole side!

Hi evaleonie

Welcome to RootsChat
Interested to know you have a connection to a Hole family and the area - is it to the same family as mine I wonder - there are quite a few with that surname in the area

I'm intrigued to know what the "coal hole" in Matlock refers to - is it to do with a certain coal field or mine ??

no bless you, i was wanting to buy some coal!!  are you in England?? my husband is moaning because he has been on one of these websites before and he says it can get very involved explaining the geography.  depending on what part of the hole family you are researching,  you should look at the following areas:
holestone moor, eddlestowe and slack.  who and when are your most recent entries? we might be able to tie them together with the ones we know.  both myself and husband are from old farming families in the area.

I have a picture of Dolly Hole outside her haberdashery in King William Street, Ironville, Derbyshire. Ironville is now included in postcod NG16 as are Hilltop & Langley Mill so not so far away.  Just in case you are interested and/or there is a connection.

In the photo Dolly is in Edwardian Dress I would think dating it to about 1910 time
She is very pretty and looks aged about 20 to 30.
