India - History for Beginners!!
« on: Monday 28 September 09 15:44 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm pleading ignorance and ask if anyone could tell me what my Grandfather would have done in India during WW2? He was based in Bombay/Poona in the Army Ordance Corps (Welch Reg.) Would he have taken part in the war against Germany? or would he have fought anyone else (sorry did explain about ignorance!!).
Is there a book that would explain things (simple language!) as there is lots of books in the library about WW2 but not about what happened in India??

The threat to India in WW2 came from the Japanese who tried to invade through Burma. It got very heated between 1942 and 1945, but the actual fighting was in the north east of the country up towards Calcutta. If your Grandfather was in Bombay for the duration then he wouldn't have seen any actual fighting. If you google Burma- India WW2 then you will get a range of sites that will give you at least the basics.

Hi, To all
If there's anyone who can help I would be so grateful, my great grandfather was in India, it was thought he was in the Boar War, but then i was given a Testimonal that was presented to him by the officers and members of Sr Davids Perseverance lodge no 55, he was a past chief templar, it mentions his splendid work in India, it is dated 20th Jan 1896, but I can't find him going or returning, although it is given on his leaving and indeed there is a son born later that year, and I'am now struggling to think what he was doing there, and where to go from here.

Kind regards Janet
