Beadnell, Northumberland, England
« on: Monday 28 September 09 04:14 BST (UK) »
My GGG lived in Beadnell, Northumberland, England and travelled to Australian in 1890's. Does anyone know the most likely shipping port that would have been close to this area?

if you have a name and possible age etc we might be able to find him/her on A* or another site with emigration records.

Hi,

From certificates I have Robert Hogg appears to have arrived in Australia abt 1898 and settled in New South Wales.

Name: Robert Hogg - Occupation: Farmer
Born:   abt 1867
Birth Place: Beadnell, Northumberland
Father: John Hogg (Deceased by 1899) - Occupation: Farm Labourer
Mother: Isabella Purvas (Deceased by 1899)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

It may be worth looking into ports further afield. I searched locally (north east ports) for my relatives who emigrated to Australia with no avail ..... then discovered they'd actually sailed from London  ???

only one on 'find my past' going to Australia 1890 - 1898 is the Hon R Hogg who i DON'T think will be a farmer!

only other Robert Hogg going to USA.

I'm starting to wonder if he swam out here..

Thank you so much for looking up the records.  I might need to look further a field. Do you know what the closest shipping port would be in Scottland?

Kind regards,

Hi, i don't think you can assume that he went from the nearest port. like jo says - maybe only the biggest ports went to Australia. (its like me having to go to london or somewhere big to catch an aeroplane to Aussie when we have an airport on the doorstep!! - it happened!)

maybe he didn't go straight to Aussie but headed somewhere else first? he seems to be on the 1881 census living in Rennington but perhaps went after that which would change the date he left. unfortunately FindMyPast only has records from 1890..
