Birth WILLIAM COLE in BOUGHTON please
« on: Friday 25 September 09 19:09 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to find the birth of William Cole. According to his 1851 census he was born about 1821 in Boughton Kent. He had a brother Austin born about 1822 also in Boughton. Their father was William. I have come to a standstill with the family and would be very grateful if anyone could find him.
Thanks Louise.

Hi, No I'm afraid I don't know which Boughton. In the 1851 census both William and Austin are said to be born in Boughton, Kent. Then in 1861 William is said to be born in Germany, Kent, which I find very confusing. Then in 1871 it just says Kent. I can't find him in any other census apart from a possible William Cole that could be him in 1881, who was born in 'Foreign Parts' This could be linked to the reference to Germany.
The Cole family were butchers and William lived in Middlesex from 1851 on wards.
Thanks Louise.

I wonder ???

Emmalina Cooper COLE married at All Hallows Poplar May 1847 and her father was William a butcher.  She married George William SIMMINS a caulker (son of George SIMMINS stone mason)
Wit:  Thomas John BARLOW & Jane Ann COLE.

Emelina Cooper COLE baptised Boughton under Blean 1827 daughter of William & Jane COLE.  Possible siblings Jane Ann 1824, Maria Louisa 1833 & Fanny 1837 http://www.familysearch.org - unfortunately the batch number includes females only at present.

Hi Louise

It might be Boughton-under-Blean. I found a few COLE baptisms there  & as Austin/Austen is an uncommon name I wondered if there's a connection:

1792 15th July  Keziah COLE   Parents Austen & Sarah
1794 16th Nov  William COLE  Parents Austen & Sarah
1798 15th Apr   Eleanor COLE  Parents Austin & Sarah
1801 15th Oct   Austin COLE    Parents Austin & Sarah

One other COLE couple, Simon & Dorcas, with two children, & a Sarah with one child.

The baptisms I have are between 1784-1812, so nothing for your William, but Austin/en & Sarah could well be his grandparents.

Hi casalguidi,  Thank you :D. After a morning searching, I am convinced that this is the right Cole family. At different times I have found both Jane Ann and Fanny living with Emmalina in Middlesex.  Like Emmalina my William Cole was also married in Poplar with father William a butcher. I also found that Emmalina named her son George Austin Simmins. Finally, you found Maria Louisa, Louisa/ Louise has been in the family for 6 generations, right down to me.

Thank you Betty I have just got your post. Yes Austin is an uncommon name and it turns up several times in the family usually as a second name. I wonder if the William you have found is my William and Austins Father?
Thank you both, I have all these new names to work with. Louise.

Hi Louise

Out of curiosity, did you manage to find them in the 1841 census only I spent quite a while looking and couldn't see them?

Hi again,  I could only find Emmalina, living in Faversham as a domestic servant.

Louise.

If you are still looking into this family there are baptisms for a William and Austin COLE at about the right time in Hernhill (next to the Boughton nr Faversham) http://www.familysearch.org (parents William and Jane)

Hernhill is next to Graveney ................ perhaps this is what the 1861 census should say rather than Germany http://www.faversham.org/pages/standard.aspx?i_PageID=152068
