pont-y-weirglawdd
« on: Friday 25 September 09 17:14 BST (UK) »
I received my great, great grandfather's death certificate today and it states he died at pont-y-weirglawdd, llechwedd, conwy in 1929.

I have searched for an area with the above mentioned name to no avail and i am now wondering if this was the name of a farmhouse/small holding as he was a farmer?

Does anyone have any idea, or even know of such a place?  I would be grateful for any input - thanks.

Hi there

Could it be  Pont Y Weirglodd??......

http://www.zoopla.co.uk/property/pont-y-weirglodd/llechwedd/conwy/ll32-8lj/13231543

Position on map.......

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=275118&y=374207&z=0&sv=LL32+8LJ&st=2&pc=LL32+8LJ&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf

Royal Mail's address finder from the postcode brings up a result so it may be still standing?!...

Hi Sarah

I think you may be onto something there!  I also searched for the name in the hope it was a property rather than an area and came up with a planning proposal for the same property you mention.  It was something to do with a public footpath being able to access the property and the owners trying to get it stopped!

You may be right once more as my great, great grandfather was stated as 'farmer' on his death certificate and that property indeed looks as though it could be a small holding or farm being set among ploughed fields.

I am never ceased to be amazed about what you can find out whilst researching the family tree.  This ancestor had 8 children by 1901 and yet at the time of his death, another daughter i did not know about is stated as being present at the death, which means he had 9 children!!  I am eagerly awaiting the 1911 census to know more about her as she must have been born after 1901.

Just read your email with interest.  If it is Bont-y-Werglog (dd), (near Llangelynin Old Church) - you may be able to solve a mystery for me and my brother. We had a great aunt  known as 'Catrin Ellen Bont' who lived there on her own for years.  She did not marry or have children and my father believed he was her only living relative - but in her will, she left the farm to a neighbour.  She was fiercely independent and accepted help from nobody.  She had one cow which calved yearly.  She sold the calf at the Cattle Market in Conwy and lived off the proceeds, until she sold the next one. In the very bad winter of 1963, a carter told my brother that he remembers taking over a wagonful of hay over to her from our farm.  She was very tall, thin and dressed always in black.  During the summers  in the1950s/1960s, my brother said she used to walk over the mountains from Llechwedd to Dwygyfylchi, to visit my father.
If you think it's the same person, I would appreciate details of your g -g -grandfather's birth and death dates, so that we can work out how she was related to us as I am busy working on the family tree. I think it was probably on my paternal grandmother's side.

Hello paintedlady,
I also have ancestors linked to Pont y Weirglodd, from around 1871/81, a small farm with 6 acres. Other members of the same family were living nearby at Llannerch y fuwch. Their surname was SLOANE and they had moved to Llechwedd from Rowen, around 1863.
Last Easter I was invited to look around Bont y Weirglodd [Bridge in the Meadow] by the present owner, and I found the experience very interesting.
If you would like a picture of the house and any further details, please send me a PM.

From emails I have received from painted lady, she has reached the conclusion that the Robert Jones she was looking for is not the Pont Weirglodd one. I am convinced that he, (Robert Jones b1854 d 1929) is the brother of my great grandmother Mary Jones b1859 in Eglwysbach, who married John Jones and farmed at Pendyffryn Farm in Dwygyfylchi. Robert Jones's only daughter was Catherine Ellen who was my father's aunty. There is a family with thesurname Sloane living in Dwygyfylchi.

Hello Eli G,
Thank you for letting me know about the Jones family from Pont y Weirglodd.
I have met one of the Sloane family living at Dwygyfylchi, and through her work tracing her ancestors, I have been able to fill in a large portion of my families history.
Regards,
Brian

I probably know who you mean and he/she will know my family as I grew up in Dwygyfylchi and my brother still lives there.
