Thomas Hardiker-which Gaol on 1841 census night?

Can anybody work out this conundrum.Thomas Hardiker was imprisoned in late January 1841 and I cant find him in the 1841 census on Ancestry,when his family are in Claughton,north of Preston,Lancs.Which jails would there have been in 1841 near Preston and Lancaster ? Should I trawl through the Prisons looking for him mis-named ? Could he have been imprisoned outside of Lancashire?By the 1851 census he was living back in Claughton.

As you have a not too common name,and if you have the patients and the time you could trawl the gazette.

I refere to it as a government paper I have seen many times, long lists of who is quest of what prison You just have to try different search entries.Name to start with

It doesn't say which prison but the page in the original record book is headed up County of Lancaster so I would look for prisons close to Preston and Lancaster.

He got 6 months for "disobeying an order of two magistrates".  The trial was on the 6 January 1841 at the County Sessions, Preston.

Thomas Hardiker Bambers yard age 47.

Thanks .... I've found him in Lancaster Gaol in 1841 census,it was logical really,but thanks for those who helped put me the right way.Interestingly,cant find him listed on Ancestry in the Gaol,but on the census discs he's visible.

Hi there!! Has anybody on this Thomas Hardiker  quest found any detail regarding his conviction other than 'dissobeying  the order of two magistrates??' Can anyone tell me what their interpretation of this conviction would mean?? I do know that he  had an illegitamate son to a Jane Beesley, born aug 1839 at Inskip, The Fylde in Lancs. Any suggestions

It was because he had failed to pay maintenance for the child.

J Bennett pleaded guilty to disobeying an order in a bastardy case.  Dr Brown conducted the case for the township of Clifton, and in default was committed to be imprisoned in Lancaster Castle for six months.
J Hardiker of Inskip, pleaded guilty to a similar indictment and he was sentenced to six months imprisonment in Lancaster Castle.
