Bigamus marraige or not?
« on: Thursday 24 September 09 20:13 BST (UK) »
I am led to believe that a 1950 marriage is a bigamous marriage but not sure, seems both parties were sent to prison.

Can anyone please point me in direction as at total loss how to go about finding if its the truth or not, i have sent off today for copy of cert.

Many thank.

Greendoor, i found the marriage i was looking for on Scotlands People, but its hearsay about the bigamy till i can prove it, seeminly if its a bigamous marriage you don't get the certificate so time will tell as i have sent off for the one in question.

Is there any way to access court records or newspaper reports of the time around when they allegedly went to prison?

The National Archives of Scotland www.nas.gov.uk have a searchable database online.

hi all  :)

had a look at the national archives of scotland
the bigamy lists from 1909 onwards are marked as closed so it could mean
they are covered by the 100 year rule

The convictions are closed but there eare a few precognitions between 1909 & 1928. The references seem to be AD15 then the year [eg AD15/28 for 1928] then a sequence number.

Just out of interest - this was one of the entries:
"1905   Joseph Ferguson, Milton Cottages, Dunoon. Pamphlets (printed and published by Joseph Ferguson) accusing his father, Thomas John Ferguson of seduction, bigamy, whore-mongery, attempted murder and incest"

There's a novel in that story, I bet.

I found a bigamous marriage for one of my relatives on Scotlandspeople which had an rce attached to it.  The rce contained the following info the date he was charged, where he was charged, his real name and his wife's name  Also I found a poor law application at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow which also gave more info on the bigamous marriage and attached to the application was a newspaper cutting giving yet again more info
