Barskeoch Farm
« on: Wednesday 23 September 09 13:00 BST (UK) »
I am interested in the history and occupants of Barskeoch Farm, Penninghame. Are there any researchers with a similar interest who have knowledge of the area? The early to mid 1800's in particular, however any information would be welcome.

Many thanks,

Hi Ev,

Thankyou very much for the information. I had suspected the Burnie family were involved in the property so you have confirmed that. I know the father's name was William so the Will you mention would definitely be his. Also his wife was Helen nee Hannah, making the John Hannah aged 80 on the 1841 more than likely her father. It's strange that none of the children seem to have married and there is another brother James living elsewhere who remained single as well.

I will try to locate some photos of the property which I suspect had been around quite a long time.

Thankyou again Ev, your help is much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Hi Sealbh.

Maybe this is too early, my relatives were also resident at Barskeoch Farm, I have a recorded birth for 1754 of  a Samuel McNarine, father William McNarine mother Agnes Chesney.

I have just found this as well.  McBurnie, Alexander B1793, McBurnie, James B1800, McBurnie, William B1792, McBurnie, John B1795, McBurnie, Margaret B1797.    Father William McBurnie, mother Helen Hannah.

Regards
Alison

You were right, it has been around a long time. A property of that name is on Roy's military survey of Scotland 1747-55.

In fact as a name it has existed since at least 1553. Try searching the National Archives of Scotland for Barskeoch...

Hi Alison,

Thanks alot for the information. I think your family were there way back in the 1600's as I found something that suggests that McNarin's (sic) were residing on the property in 1684. According to the Parish lists there is an Alexander, Janet and Gilbert McNarin living with spouses and another family.

Hi Kirsty,

Thanks alot for the photo and links. I'm wondering if that is the exact property called Barskeoch Farm or were there others in the area as it just reads Barskeoch. It would be great to locate a front on photo of the property.

Roy's military survey of Scotland is a very useful site.....thankyou. I will have a look around the NAS site for more information to try and build a history. Thanks again for your help Kirsty, much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Alison I forgot to mention there is a book titled 'Penninghame - The story of a Parish' which has a page on Barskeoch apparently. Sounds worth tracking down.

All the best.
