What did a grounder do in a tannery?

Can anyone help with this one please.  I am researching the occupational history in my village in the 19th century and several men are described as "grounder".  There was a tannery and a paper mill nearby, but since one very useful man describes himself as "skinner/grounder" I'm guessing that the grounders worked in the tannery.

A grounder dyed or coloured the short fur nearest to the skin by "stubbing" it with a special brush dipped in dye.
