Hi tracn4

I'm guessing that you may have already seen this at the World Connect website ?

"Duncan McEwan Carmichael COUPER - d. Timaru 1924"

[Part of "GRANT and related families" trees.]

Hello again

Whoops  ... I just noticed on that link I gave, that the researcher is only wanting to answer questions relating to the GRANT family.   ::)

*   Can we be of any help to you ?

If you have any questions, ("mysteries" that need solving),
then feel free to add them here.    :)

Hi

thanks for your message, yes I've seen that on rootsweb but since the guy on there doesn't want to be contacted we are trying to find proof that duncan came from that family in scotland.

Thanks for trying ;D

Hi Tracn4

He might not want to be contacted - but what about the COUPER person he lists as the source of the COUPER data?  Her name and email are shown there - an Australian address. Also found here:

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mwi/tipperary.txt

Looking at the Rootsweb tree and the list of names for your Duncan's children - it seems to tie up.
The child named Margaret Lindsay mostly, but also the naming pattern of the children - if comparing to the Scottish pattern, even without looking at the Rootsweb Tree I would have suggested Duncan's parents would be :
William (1st son) and Margaret LINDSAY (2nd daughter) with 3rd sun named after Duncan himself.

The only thing that made me hesitate is the lack of a child named after Duncan's wife Elizabeth - which should be the 3rd Daughter (or the 1st daughter if Elizabeth's mother is also named Elizabeth) but because of Margaret's position, I would guess Elizabeth's father is named Alexander (2nd son) and her mother is  named Jessie ( or Jane, Janet,  Jean 1st daughter) - and there is an unknown reason why there is no daughter named Elizabeth (if the list of their children is complete, should be where Henrietta is)

Cheers

I see a Duncan COUPER on the Census 1861 and 1871  - do you have those
Seems to fit yours - right age & he was a Blacksmith.
Parents names fit - except his father is listed in 1861 as being from Fife (which disagrees with the Rootsweb tree)

added: also on 1851.
I think the Rootsweb tree has Duncan's mother about right, but his father all wrong.
I think his father is William COUPER born Kinghorn Fife 1806 to Thomas COUPER and Christian WESTWATER - from IGI.

Hi Ambly

As far as Iknow those were the only children duncan and elizabeth had,I found them in the bdm historical records and the kids wrote letters in the timaru newspaper.According to a tree on ancestry elizabeths parents were alexander and janet so well done on your guess of their names! :)

I haven't seen the census records you mentioned as yet but I know duncan was a blacksmith in timaru (old newspaper add from timaru times)

Thanks for your help :)

Hi  ;D

The Scottish naming pattern can be a huge help in working out a family line in Scotland, especially where there are no or few Civil Registration events (post 1855)  to compare to.

The 1851 Census:
Search in:  Dalmeny Parish, West Lothian
For: William CAUPER b 1808,  Kingham

Definitely same people as in 1861/1871

I'm noting more than one instance of  William's wife,  "Margaret" being recorded as "Marjory" - name is one of the various interchangeable names found in Scotland's records.
