Horace MADDOW
« on: Monday 21 September 09 05:07 BST (UK) »
hi there,
i am trying to find relatives of Horace Maddow. His military number was 466509. He was born june 22, 1887. His occupation when he joined the military on july 14, 1915 was listed as a teamster. he joined the military in edmonton, alberta. at that time he had a sister Jessie.

he had listed Suffolk, England as where he was born.

I can find any info on him after he signed up for the war. he is not listed as being killed in action so i can only assume at this time that he made it home from wwI.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Slang

This looks like him returning from war:
Party of Medically unfits, etc. sailing from Liverpool
Nominal Roll of Men to be Discharged in Canada
6th List

Number - 466509,
Rank - Pte,
Name - Maddow H,
Reserve Unit - 1que
Military District - 13
Classification - C2
Reason for discharge - Dis. of. A.G.
Residence - Edmonton
Occupation Farmer

Travelled on board the Olympus in November 1917

Then I wondered about this entry:
There is a Harry Maddow, lodger, aged 25, teamster, born England, on the 1911 Alberta census

And then I looked at his Suffolk connection (as this is where I live)
This appears to be quite an unusual surname in the UK with the majority of those I could find in 1881 living in Clerkenwell London, but having been born in Ipswich Suffolk.

There is a Horace Dowe Maddow
Births Sept 1883 Ipswich Suffolk 4a 703
(the only Horace Maddow birth between 1880 and 1890 anywhere in England according to Free BMD)
The middle name would suggest a link to this birth:
Annie Dowe Maddow Births Mar 1881 Ipswich 4a 707

Horace's birth appears to be the last reference to the Maddow's family in Suffolk. I have not found him, or Annie Dowe Maddow in the 1891 census.

And then a reference to his emigration:
Horace Maddow, age 17, born 1884 travelling to Portland USA on board Tunisian 21 March 1901

Hope this helps

Regards

Nell

I agree with Nell that the name Maddow is most unusual.

I wondered therefore whether this is a corruption over many years of the more common Suffolk name of Meadow/s?

There are no Maddow researchers named on the Suffolk Surnames List.

Just a thought ;-)

Pat ...
Every time I find an ancestor,
I have to find two more!

SUFFOLK - Pendle, Stygall, Pipe, Fruer, Bridges, Fisk, Bellamy, Sparham - all link to  Framlingham
DERBY - Bridges and Frost (originally Framlingham/Parham)
NOTTINGHAM - Lambert & Selby
BERKSHIRE/then Hammersmith LDN - Fulker
LDN/MDX - Murray, Clancy, Broker, Hoskins, Marsden, Wilson, Sale

GGfather Michael Wilson born Cork, lived Fulham London - moved to Boston USA 1889, what happened next?

According to the index there is a Jessica Maddow born 1890 on the 1911 England census living in Wandsworth but I cannot find a birth entry for her. As it is a pay per view site (and I have no credits left) I have not been able to look to see where she was born.

Good luck with your hunt

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all your help. I did go to the archives this week and was able to find some more info.

Horace Dowe Maddow, died Mar 18, 1972, Rosehave, camrose, Alberta Canada

His sister Jessie Maddow had 2 addresses in Canada, C/o Dr. Brett and Brett's Hospital in Banff Alberta and YWca IN Edmonton, Canada

Still have not been able to locate Jessie or find out if either had any children. Would love to see Horace's military medals back with his family if anyone can help identify/locate them.

thanks
sherri
