Percy William Slater
« on: Sunday 20 September 09 12:51 BST (UK) »
Hi, any help would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to research Percy William Slater born 27th October 1908 in Winterton, Lincs and died 23rd August 1992 in Grimsby.  We beleive his fathers name may have been John Turner Slater.  There was some sort of huge bust up with his father apparently but this may just be family rumour. I can find no record of his birth at all?.  Thanks if you can help

Hi Cadoganpier,

Glanford Brigg covering Winterton, this looks a likely birth registration:

Percy William Slater
Dec 1908 Glanford Brigg 7a 653

The 1911 census index suggests that his parents were John Turner Slater and wife Annie Eliza.

Marriage Mar 1907 Glanford Brigg 7a 1119
John Turner Slater - Annie Eliza East

Would you like us to try to find them on earlier censuses?
(John was born ca. 1884 and Annie Eliza ca. 1888)

I've been looking at the East family. Seems Annie Eliza was born in Kirton, so this might well be her:

Ann Eliza East
Dec 1886 Glanford Brigg 7a 668?

1891
RG12/2623 96 8 & 9
Bishop Norton, Lincolnshire

George East, head, 41, Ag lab, b. Appleby
Rebecca, wife, 41, b. Waddingham
Alice, dau, 17, Mother's help, b. Grimsby
Frank, son, 10, scholar, b. Bonby?
Kate, dau, 8, scholar, b. do.
Rose, dau, 6, scholar, b. Worlaby
Annie, dau, 4, b. Kirton Lindsey
George W, son, 1, b. do.

Can't see the George Slater / Harriett marriage either, nor can I see him before his marriage as George Slater.

However I notice he's called George T in 1901, and there's a Thomas Slater on early censuses who'd fit the bill. Also a possible marriage Thomas Slater - Harriett Clarke, Sep 1867 Caistor (and earlier censuses show a Harriett Clarke born ca. 1845 Winterton ... as it happens, the young Slater family and this Harriett's parents were neighbours in 1861)

I had seen that marriage Tati, but had not made the link. Good detective work.
