Hi Ian

Were your family connected to the Salvation Army in any way?  My parents were officers and based in either Cleckheaton or Farnworth when I was born at the Crossley in 1947.  I understood it to be
'the place' where many Salvation Army mothers went to give birth.  R.
Wests of West Wycombe.

Hi Royd, thanks for your reply.  I've never heard of such a connection.  My mother died when I was 7 and my father 10 years later.  I think I would have seen something in those years.  Both sets of grandparents were around for many years and I never saw anything there either.

It was a Maternity Hospital, for married women but it’s connection with Star Hall, a Christian Foundation founded by Frank Crossley, who saw the need for decent conditions for women to have their babies, meant unmarried girls were given shelter there and if necessary their babies would be homed with Christian families ,my husband’s grandmother adopted such a baby even though she had six children of her own . This would be about 1910.
A wonderful woman ,that baby girl was very lucky to join such a family.
Most houses in that area” Ancoats”- at that time had no bathrooms or hot water ,real poverty and deprivation.
The Crossley family were real philanthropists ,they had money from their factories manufacturing “ Crossley Springs ‘ for vehicles etc. and used it to benefit the families in Ancoats including t he hospital.
All the above is on much earlier postings but please feel free to ask again if you need more help.
Viktoria.

Perhaps it was Crossley Maternity Hospital, Mirfield?
About 5 miles from Cleckheaton.

Ahhhhh!  A light turns on!  Thank You.  I was once told I was born in Mirfield but I don't know who told me.  My birth certificate just says "Crossley hospital", not where, I had no idea there were two of them!  This makes a lot more sense than Manchester.

This is my confusion.
On my birth certificate it says I was born crossley hospital ancoats.

My mum shown me how she got into the building apparently it was on the left side of it.  Then I came across a hospital in ancoats. It just said ancoats hospital.
So I was confused about them both.
My mum pointed out to me the correct one by the 2 photos.

So what I'm trying to do now is work out would my mum have stayed in a house after having me or would she have gone home after a short time in hospital.
It's just something I never thought of asking her about. I wish I had now.

If anyone can help me solve this.
I would really appreciate it.
Thank you again everyone

Kind regards
Dorothy
