German POW's in Kent
« on: Friday 18 September 09 13:11 BST (UK) »
Hi
i am trying to find out about German POW's that were held prisoner during ww11 but what information could be held about them after the war ended.
I know a lot did not return to germany but stayed and worked on farms after the war ended, i am looking specifically at Sevenoaks in kent and a pow camp called Gaza barracks in sevenoaks weald, and feel sure that any that stayed up untill the 1950's some records would be held, can any one give me help with this,
i have some information about a specific person and photograths too but no surname. :(
 many thanks belleisa

This may help though the information contained is rather discouraging:

Interesting you should say that Gaza Barracks was a POW camp because it is not listed on the POW Camp roll. However, there was a POW camp at Tonbridge and the POWs from there did get sent out to do labouring work in the surrounding areas (sometimes not returning to the POW camp but being based at work camps - usually just some nissan huts*). Gaza Barracks itself was a British military camp.

* locating and researching POW work camps is an almost impossible task as I have found out whilst carrying out similar research on a camp in Cheshire. It isn't listed on any official documents that I could find, even though it is clearly remembered s housing POW labourers by the locals

K

thank you for that, what i am specifically looking for is after the war, as the person stayed untill at least 1950, so i had hoped that some sort of record would be kept somewhere, or were they just released and carried on as before whilst working on the farms, would they have had to register any where, with police or council,   was tax paid in those days,  i do have pictures of him in uniform i believe he was a paratrouper and i have pictures after the war,, also i need to find out if he was always at gaza camp or moved there after being held prisoner somewhere else in which case i have not a lot of chance of getting anywhere,  i know where is germany  he came from but its that illusive surname that holds me back. belleisa

My father was a guard at Ash POW camp in Kent....

I have a pic of him, the translator and the Lagerfuhrer... I know this camp was open until 1947 at least....
One more charge and then be dumb,

As kyt indicated the National Archives research guide will tell you that P.O.W. Records were sent to Berlin.

The Camp locations and Diaries 1945 - 1948 are listed in T.N.A. Catalogue.

FO939/82 - 191   FO939/273 - 276   FO939/294 - 338
