Hi Libby,

It does get very confusing.

I have two Armitage families, one via my husbands gt grandfather and the other via my husbands gt grandmother.

Elizabeth Armitage married William Lockwood  1835 Silkstone.
I have her father as Richard Armitage who married Sarah Lockwood 1802 Silkstone.

On Richards death certificate 1840 aged 77 yrs Hoylandswaine ( if it is the correct one the informant is Benjamin Armitage Penistone)
I don't know who this Benjamin is or anything else about Richard.

Richards marriage  to Sarah  did not state him as a widower, but  I think it could have been his second marriage.

Back to Elizabeth Armitage, her grandson Edward (born Thurgoland 1841) married Mary Dickinson,  the daughter of Joseph Dickinson and Mary Hinchliffe.

Joseph Dickinson Bap Cawthorne was the son of Israel / Ezra Dickinson

Ezra Dickinson married Margaret Armitage (1806  Silkstone).
Margaret was the daughter of Joseph Armitage.

Joseph Armitage married Mary Thompson (1770 in Silkstone) he was from Cawthorne.

That was good to get off my chest, hope you could follow that.

Appreciate any input you may have.   ::)

Hi KR  :),

About Elizabeth Lockwood

Born circa 1828 at Barugh, in 1851 living at Little Royde Hoylandswaine with her parents John Lockwood (b. circa 1802, Monk Bretton) and Ann, nee Waring (b.circa 1802, Hoylandswaine) .  Little Royde was a farm, and in 1841 Ann's mother Elizabeth, a widow, was living and farming there with her illegitimate son William Cousins.

In 1858 Elizabeth Lockwood married Charles Armitage (b. circa 1824) at Hoylandswaine

About Charles Armitage

Born circa 1824 at Hoylandswaine, son of Israel Armitage (circa 1775) and Julia nee Fretwell (circa 1780).  In 1851 he was living with his widowed mother on a farm at 17, Rayner Lane, Hoyland Swaine, also living with Julia and Charles was William Cousin, son of Ann Waring, nee Cousin.

Israel and Julia had a son named Benjamin born 1808, could he be the informant on Richard's death certificate?

Oh dear, there's so many Armitages' and Lockwoods' they must connect some how, question is how?

Do any of the above appear in your tree?

Libby

Hi Libby,

I agree all these families must eventually connect somehow.

The trouble I find is, when I have finished looking at a Parish another name appears in the family which I wasn't looking out for, and I could do with re-ordering the film, (which has now gone up in price to £7.50).

I have found the marriage of your John Lockwood & Ann Waring  in my Silkstone notes.
It is good to know other families so you can group them together.

I think the father of William Lockwood (who married Elizabeth Armitage) could possibly be Thomas Lockwood who married Ann Whitehead in 1806 Silkstone.

I have not come across your Charles Armitage yet, (marr Elizabeth Lockwood).

I am still waiting for Penistone fiche to arrive but in the meantime I have some Burial transcripts from Barnsley F.H.S.
I notice there is a burial for Israel Armitage 8th May 1845 age 71 yrs Cathill is this your Israel ?

Hi Libby,

I'm confused (easily done)

I have Charles Armitage marrying Elizabeth Lockwood in 1855, and not as you say in 1858. Their first child Ann was born in  Q2 1857

Marriages Dec 1855
Armitage  Charles    Wortley  9c 248
LITTLEWOOD  Sarah     Wortley  9c 248
LOCKWOOD  Elizabeth     Wortley  9c 248
TOWNEND  David     Wortley  9c 248

There's also a marriage in 1858 for an Elizabeth Lockwood, but a male name is missing - could this be causing some confusion?

I am unable to find Elizabeth Lockwood on the 1851 census - she's not with her parents at Little Royd, Hoylandswaine

Have I got the right people?

My wife  is the fourth great granddaughter of Israel Armitage (1776-1845)

David Fretwell
(not yet connected to Julia Fretwell who married Israel Armitage)
ARMITAGE - Penistone, Hoylandswaine
FRETWELL - Thurlstone, Penistone, Hoylandswaine
KILNER - Penistone, Hoylandswaine, Etc

Hello David,

Sorry to have confused you, 1858 was a typo on my part  :-[.  I do have the correct year entered on my tree.

And you are right, Elizabeth wasn't with her parents in 1851 - I must stop researching into the early hours.

Hi David,

I am also interested in finding out who Isreal Armitage was, he married Julia Fretwell in 1803 but as yet I have not found out in which church they married. Julia is my 3x greatgrandmother, her illegitimate son Thomas Fretwell was born 1799 in Hoylandswaine, baptised in 1800 at Silkstone. Thomas married Sarah Robinson at Penistone Church in 1823 and had 5 children, Charles, Mary, Sarah, Joseph and Ann. They lived in Thurlstone and Thomas and Sarah are buried in St John Church yard, Penistone.
There are some Armitage grandchildren of Julia Armitage (Fretwell) also buried in St John Church yard.

If anyone knows where Isreal and Julia married I would be very interested and also where was Isreal born. Julia's funeral was at Penistone Church (don't know if she was buried there though) and I have not found out where Isreal's funeral was or where he was buried.

Any help appreciated.
Thank you
Sheila

Hello all,

I too am a descendant of Israel Armitage and Julia Frettwell. My brother has the full (our fairly comprehensive) family tree which he is sending to me. I'll do some digging and come back to you with where it fits in on my side. Ellen Armitage married my great, great grandfather, John Henry Whitehouse, if that makes matters easier?

Looking forward to connecting,
Miriam
