Not mentioned in Phillimore, but in my search for Susannah I am certain it was mentioned as a chapel of Penistone. This date would be c1800.

Good luck, KR.  I hope you find Mary Hinchcliffe - it's a popular name in West Yorks isn't it?

Thurlstone became a separate parish from Penistone in 1906.  Somewhat surprising, because there is evidence of settlement in Thurlstone predating settlement in Penistone, where the church dates from 12th century.  For about 50 years before St Saviour's Church, Thurlstone was built in 1905, Anglican worship was in the Church School at Townend, but baptisms, marriages and funerals would have been in Penistone, which served an area of about 50 square miles.

I know others are researching HINCHLIFF(E) and HINCHCLIFF(E) in the Penistone area.

One branch of the HINCHLIFFE family worshipped in Netherfield Chapel and went there for marriages and burials.

Samueller, I would greatly appreciate anything you may have on the surname Crossley, though it gets worse as Susannah married William Smith of Thurlstone at Penistone in 1827, and had a son, John Smith, at Thurlstone in 1837, apparently before registration.

I have a Mary Hinchcliffe who married Aaron Teasdale in 1769 in Tankersley near Penistone. She was born on 18th July 1745 in Wortley. Is she related to your family?

KR, 1851 census indicates Susannah born at Silkstone not Penistone. She did however marry William Smith there (Penistone) in 1827. William b c1798 and their daughters Margret (b c1830) and Hannah (b c1835) were born in Penistone, all shown thus in 1851 census. I would appreciate anything from the fische please.

Hi,

Thanks for the info on Thurlstone Sam. I have not come across Netherfield Chapel yet.

Duckweed,
I have not got back that far yet.

Mary Hinchliffe (Bn abt 1825 ) married Joseph Dickinson at Cawthorne in 1842, the writing is so bad I can't really make out her fathers name, I am guessing it could be Jacob,  he was a weaver.
I already new Joseph Dickinson's father was called Isreal / Ezra but looking at the marriage certificate you would never guess it said Israel.

Have noted the other details Roger.

I am always on the look out for Armitage, Dickinson and Hinchliffe.

Thanks all
KR  :)

KR,

Many of the DICKINSON family were Quakers and their marriages etc were at the Meeting House at High Flatts.  Wakefield FHS has published a transcript of the marriage registers for Quaker Meeting Houses in the District.  You probably know that before Hardwicke's Marriage Act all weddings had to be in Chuch of England except Quakers and Jews.

Hi Sam,

That's interesting. Where is High Flatts, is it near Penistone or Thurlstone ?

After looking at the main churches I was thinking of looking at other religious denominations, I have found Manchester families baptised at a Baptist church as well as the Parish church.
