Hi Redroger and anyone else researching CROSSLEY of Penistone area. 

There is an article in the Autumn 2009 issue of 'The Flowing Stream,' the journal of the Sheffield & District FHS on 'The Mysterious Crossley Family.'  I think another word to describe the family would be 'Colourful.'  It refers to CROSSLEYs of Swinden, Langsett, Thurlstone and Penistone in Yorkshire among other places such as Liverpool, Hampton Court Palace, Jamaica and Hong Kong.

I meant to mention also that for those researching DICKINSON, I have today discovered that records of births (not baptisms in the case of Quakers of course) and burials at High Flatts Meeting House are held at the archives in Huddersfield Central Library, while marriages are at the West Riding Registry in Wakefield.  Barnsley FHS has printed transcript of the marriages but not births and burials.

Those researching DICKINSON of High Flatts might be interested in an article about them in a book by Chris Heath.  2 or 3 pages plus a Family Tree of descendants of John and Judeth DICKINSON from about 1650 to 1850.  Chiefly about Elihu DICKINSON the tanner.  "Denby & District II - From Landed Lords to Inspired Industrialists" by Chris Heath.  I don't have ISBN, publisher or year (probably in the last 10), but you can look on Amazon and/or abebooks and then request from your local library on the inter-library loan scheme.

I've come across another CROSSLEY of Thurlstone.  Penistone Parish Magazine June 1898 records the 26 Feb 1898 burial of Joseph CROSSLEY of Fulshaw Cross aged 70.  It doesn't indicate whether the burial was in Penistone churchyard or Stottercliffe cemetery.  Fulshaw Cross was in the township of Thurlstone, parish of Penistone.

Hi KR,

I am resurrecting this thread as my Cousins/Lockwood's married into an Armitage family, does the name Israel Armitage mean anything to you?  Maybe it's possible Israel was the brother, or father of your Richard, as Israel was living in Hoylandswaine in 1841, and according to that census he was aged 65.

It's late now, and I really should go to bed, but I'll get back to you.  I'll do more digging on Israel, and refer to my notes and see what I can uncover.

Fingers crossed we'll make a connection.
