Bellam/Butt family IOW
« on: Wednesday 16 September 09 10:23 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any information on Sophia Bellam b 1846 from IOW. She married Jaques (James) Gaudion Audoire in 1866 on Alderney. Her mother was possibly Sophia also and I'm not sure if her mother in turn was Mary Ann Butt married to James Bellam.

Hi Shad,

Sorry, this isn't any help at all. Just to say that the only Sophia wife of Mr Audoire I can see on the censuses was born ca. 1846 in Alderney.

Having a look at censuses before 1871, the most likely candidate for this Sophia that I can see is a Sophia Gaudion, daughter of another Sophia who was born ca. 1815 in Cowes, IOW and her husband Peter  ???

Thanks and sorry. Yes I realised after I posted that message that the younger one was born on Alderney and it was only the older Sophia born on IOW.

Hi Nell, possibility her surname was Butt, mother Mary Ann b1791 and father James Bellam b1792. Don't have any other information.
Thank you

Hello,
I noticed your request about the Bellam/Butt family.  I am a distant relation of the Ballems of Alderney.  For ages I was misled by a misread of the 1861 census which gave the surname as Ballern but I have since been sent the marriage certificate of Elizabeth Ballem (my great-great grandmother) which confirms the surname as Ballem.  It also appears as Bellam on an earlier census.  Sophie Ballem was the sister of James Ballem, my great-great-great grandfather.  Their mother was Mary Ann Butt, listed as an Innkeeper on the 1861 census.  At that time presumably Sophie (married Gaudion) had died because her children Sophia and Edward are living with Mary Ann.  I hope this information is of interest to you.  If I can help with information on the other Ballems (there is a descendant named Ballem living in Australia), please let me know.

Good evening,
Did you manage to get any further with Bellam in the IOW?
Pierre Gaudion and Sophia Bellam's son Edward James emigrated to Jersey (30 miles!) and his daughter Eliza Louise Gaudion was my gt grandmother
