Holy Trinity Church, Ettingshall, Wolverhampton
« on: Wednesday 16 September 09 00:44 BST (UK) »
Would anyone have any information about this Church? My grandparents married there in 1909.
I really don't know where to start looking. Also, my great-aunt was a leading lady with the Trinity Operatic Society, which performed Gilbert and Sullivan operettas in the locality, around 1947. I think the Society was linked to the Church. Any ideas gratefully received.

Hi Willow, I checked the link, but found that it is a Catholic Church. On my grandparents' Certified  Copy Marriage Cert it says "1909 marriage performed at Holy Trinity Church, in the parish of Ettingshall, Wolverhampton Stafford. Then beneath the personal details it says "Married in the Parish Church according to the rites and ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns by me Jno B Colley (Curate)". So I don't think it can be the same one. Of course I realise it could have been demolished years ago :(
The actual date of the marriage was 25th December, 1909, and they both give their addresses as No6 St Mary's Terrace (grandfather) and No2 St Mary's Terrace, (grandmother) Ettingshall.
In the 1911 Census they are living with in-laws in George Street, Ettingshall. Since my grandfaher's side of the family were all staunch Methodists, I'm wondering if there was some 'ecclesiastical' arrangement between the Churches, and although there was a Methodist Chapel in George Street I'm not sure when it was built.
Any ideas most welcome, and if you have any look-ups you need in Worcester . . . .
First 10 years I lived in Wolves, 2nd 10 years in Shropshire, working in Wolves, then moved away.

Hi giraffe,

I just looked through that web page and think it means that it is what used to be called "High Church" but definitely CofE and not Roman Catholic.

So it would have been the "Established Church".  It belongs to the Lichfield Diocese whereas a Catholic church in that area would belong to Birmingham Archdiocese (Diocese of Minervia? if I remember correctly)..

Holy Trinity Church Ettingshall is shown on the 1901 map on the South side of Millfields road just before the junction of Gibbet Lane ( Now Ward Street) Later this site would have been about where the Tarmac plant used to be or the Sprinfield Social Club..
Trinity Operatic Society still exists, however it was formed at Trinity Church which was a methodist church situated on Compton road Wolverhampton. It was peculiar in that it had some Cof E services as part of a covenant.
i hope this is of help.

Thank you so much Kaliannan, This looks like the Church I was after, especially since my grandparents walked to their wedding in midwinter, and they lived not far from this one. The only old map I have of Ettingshall has such small print and is not very detailed. Could you tell me where you got yours please?
Also I think the Compton Road Methodist Trinity Church would be the one where my great- uncle and aunt worshipped. He played the organ, and she was in the choir, also she was leading lady in many of the Operatic Society productions. Would your map show the location of this church too, and do you know how I could contact anyone from the Society?
