Tom,

Hill of Keir is a farm in the Parish of Skene, Aberdeenshire.

Mains of Keir is an adjacent farm where I grew up and my mother still lives there.

Broadshade is another farm adjacent to Hill of Keir.

Leddach House is not far from Hill of Keir - this was an estate house but has been converted to a Care Home.

Hill of Keir is about 8 miles west of Aberdeen and sits high up with dramatic views over Loch of Skene and the Hill of Fare beyond.

The nearest village is Kirktown of Skene and the Church there has a graveyard with some very old gravestones - there might be some family clues there  or in the Parish records.

Hill of Keir farm was small and is still there but the farm steadings have been converted to houses and the land is no longer worked as a farm.

The town of Westhill is rapidly expanding and Broadshade has already been sold for housing. I think that Hill of Keir will also be built on in the near future.

I hope this helps.

Would you happen to know if Glasgoego Cottage is the little cottage beside the main road passed Blackburn, along the A96 just on the left beyond the Kinellar Roundabout.   My Great Grandmother lived there at one point.

Tom,

I have never heard of Glasgoego Cottage but there is Glasgoforest Farm and Glasgoforest Croft - these are just beyond the Kinellar roundabout on the A96 on the left.

My grandparents lived not far from there and I still have a lot of relatives in the area.

Tom.

Tom,

Glascoego Cottage (built 1830) is the former name of the house now known as Balbrogie House. I know this as I live there!

Somewhere, there is a parish map of about 1840 with the house clearly marked on it, with the old name. Unfortunately, I can't find it right now.

Cottage is rather misleading as it was (and is) quite a substantial dwelling. At one point Kinellar House was known as Glascoego Lodge, and I wonder if there is some sort of connection to the main house, although I have heard tell that it was built to house the manager of a whiskey distillery that was opened (and quickly) closed in the village of Blackburn.

It is the large white house visible on the left of the old A96 at the top of Balbrogie Woods.

Send me your email address and I will happily send you some photographs.

Sincerely,

Nick Morton

Have you lived there long as there are a few un-answered questions I have....

Many regards

It is my mother's side of the family (Cumming) I am interested in and the female line is either Scroggie or Robbie.

Perhaps, I should post this elsewhere, but the subject pertains to the general area of the Glasgoego Cottage being discussed.

My research has traced my great-great grandmother Jessie McBain (b. 26 Jul 1854 w/o Samuel Poole Greenlaw) to Kinellar, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and shown her to be the daughter of Alexander McBain and Rachel Hay.

This particular McBain family can be found on the 1851 census living at the home farm of Glasgoego with constable John Henderson, next door to John and Christina Duncan as well as William Clark of Woodhill Cottage living with Charlotte and Mary Henderson.

Does anyone have information on "the home farm of Glasgoego" or this McBain family?

Thanks,
Brian
