Hill of Keir, Aberdeenshire
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 20:28 BST (UK) »
On the 1841 Census, there is mention of my great great grandmother at a Hill of Keir (I assume it to be a farm).

Christina Scroggie, married a John Robbie, a day labourer at Hill of Keir.

John Scroggie is named as a Farmer.

On the same Census page there are other premises which look like "Leddach" and another which looks like "Broadshed" or something.

Can anybody tell me if Hill of Keir was a farm and does it still exist today.   I can find two Hill of Keirs in Aberdeen, I'd like to try to narrow down which one it is...

Look on a map for the other placenames on your census page. That should identify the correct area.
GRAY - Inveresk; Lanarkshire
LINDSAY - Lanarkshire
PURDIE - Lanarkshire; W. Lothian
POZZI - Elgin; Lancashire
MACKENZIE, MORISON - Stornoway
ARCHIBALD, HAY, HUNTER, SNADDON - Clackmannanshire
COXON, HALL, JACKSON, SHOTTON - Northumberland

I cant find a premises called Leddach but there is a place called Broadshade so maybe that ties it down.   Can you tell me if "Mains of Keir" still exists today?

It seems the Hill of Keir you want is in the parish of Skene.

The National Library of Scotland has a great range of maps of different dates. This link should take you to a OS map where you will find Broadshade and Leddach Croft below Hill of Keir on the left-hand edge of the map.

Mains of Keir is not shown -probably off the edge of this sheet. If you Google "Mains of Keir" you'll find Skene Caravan park there.
