Please clean and/or colour Uncle Joe in Australia
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 12:38 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'd be very grateful if someone could please have a go at cleaning up this photo of my husband's great-great-great Uncle Joe Barnard. It would be nice to have a touch of colour too if this is possible. We don't know much about Uncle Joe unfortunately, but he was from a globe-trotting family and from this photo he appears to have ended up in Australia at some point!  He was born in 1847, so I would guess this would have been taken in the 1880's or 90's, but if anyone could date it more precisely, that would be great. There is a dedication on the back to  Joe's niece, Lizzie Harris,  who was my husband's great-grandmother.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Em

Thanks very much for the link - very interesting. I think I may drop them a line.  I had already searched on the photographer - R Duryea, and I think he opened up his studios in the 1890's (though the advert did say he is "returning" to Albany) and then he appears to have been killed, along with 2 others, in a boating accident in the early 1900's.  Sometime ago I posted another photo which we didn't know much about, and the general feeling which I agreed with, was that it was taken in Australia. Now we've found this photo of Uncle Joe in Albany, I wonder if the other photo was taken in the Albany area - there's someone in the middle of the photo with a beard (a bit darker) and a watch chain - do you think it could be him a few years before? The more I look the more I think it has to be him! He's even holding his left arm the same way! The photo definitely came from the Barnard family, but we didn't know who was in it.

Best regards

Helen
