looking for birth origin of convict - BARRETT benjamin
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 04:18 BST (UK) »
I have the info for life after transportation so am working my way back from there.  My hope is to find his place of birth.

Benjamin BARRETT  born b/w 1808 - 1810 Eng. (age from cemetery death 1889 age 79)
Parents:   John BARRETT & Mary LLewelln (from Grave details)
Married:  Mary Greig b scotland (?) married in Australia
Conviction:  Jan. 1828 Lancaster

There are 4 places within my documents:
Theft was in Manchester.
Court was in Lancaster.
Sailed from Portsmouth.
Physical description from Aust. convict archives has Plymouth (but under no heading)

From memory, someone had him born in Exeter with no supporting documents and other info they had was wrong so I disregarded this avenue.
I will add his childrens name in hope that may help:  Amelia. Frances. Ralph. Mary. John. Thomas. Henry. Elizabeth. Benjamin. Emily. Alice. (all born in Australia).

I would be very grateful for any help with this or even some suggestions on where to look.  I think because Benjamin only spent approx. 18 years in England, there is not much info, and his fathers name is quite popular 'John Barrett'.
Thank you.

Bit More,

Not sure, but a Benjamin BARRATT was transported to Tasmania (VDL) conviction dated 21 Jan 1828, trial was at Liverpool Quarter Sessions, sentence was for Life.  Transported on Woodford sailed 29 April 1828.

I will try to find more info about that chap...

Cheers,  JM

Bit More,

On the online site for Australian newspapers, a Benjamin Barratt, ex Woodford, received Conditional Pardon in 1843.  I know that on at least some of the CP's issued in NSW in that era that there was info showing where and when born.   Hopefully some of the experienced Tasmanian RChatters will know if that type of info was on the CP's there.

(Colonial Times Newspaper, 10 Jan 1843, page 4)

Cheers, Hope this helps.

Thanks JM,

It is the same person.  All docs refer to him as Barret, his conviction is the only doc. that says BARRATT.
I do have the ship, pardons and tickets of leave etc, all of which dont have birthplace.  I haven't been able to get good understanding of English records after a year and half on Australian records but im hoping i will get the hang of these ie; parishes and shires etc.
Thank you kindly for your help.  Regards.

Hi nax071,

There is an indent for your convict Benjamin Barratt.
Unfortunatley its not online.
If you contact the Tasmanian Archives they may be able to send you a copy.

email  taho@education.tas.gov.au

The indents normally have Native Place.
Good luck.

Hi there,

My next suggestion would be the marriage certificate, and there's an extracted record on IGI showing he married Mary GRIGG on  26 Dec 1842 when he was aged  29  and she was 22.

That document would indicate his birth year was abt 1813 !  I'm not sure what other info was on Tas marriage certificates in those times, perhaps his parents names or place of birth (crossing my fingers for you)

Cheers, JM

Umm, bit more,

I think "Peggy" was one of those girls names that could also be Mary, Margaret, Meg etc.  Here's a Benjamin BarrItt's details, son of John and Peggy

Benjamin Barritt
Birth 5 Jun 1812
Christening  30 Aug 1812 at Colne, Lancashire, England   (perhaps at St Bartholomew - not sure)
Father's Name: John Barritt
Mother's Name: Peggy

I spotted this on my Ances*** sub,  its on an Index of Historic Records - perhaps worth following up  ;)

Cheers JM
