Long Newnton P.R.- Sarah Turk and Thomas Davis
« on: Monday 14 September 09 05:18 BST (UK) »
Hi!

I was wondering if anyone who has access to Long Newnton's parish records could help me? I'm searching for the births of Sarah Turke (between 1693-1700) and Thomas Davis (between 1693 and 1700).  They married in Tetbury in 1718, but unfortunately after searching the parish records neither appears to be born there. I have access to the Bishop's Transcripts and see Davis and Turk families living in Long Newnton, but the records are missing for the years I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Kind regards,

Donna

Donna,

Although Long Newnton is very near to Tetbury, it is in fact in WIL according to Parloc and the LDS search site so perhaps you should contact the WIL forum  The map at  http://www.wiltshirefhs.co.uk/wilts%20parish%20map.pdf
indicates that the parish has only been in GLS since 1930.

Chas,

I  looked on Gen-Uki and according to them the parish records for Long Newnton have been transferred  to the Gloucester Record Office. I checked their catalog and Wilts online, and they are in fact there and not in Wilts. I'm don't know why the earlier  records aren't in Wilts too? Thank you for your help!

Kind regards,

Donna

I'll be in Glos RO in the next week or so, and will look for you, unless someone else finds the information beforehand.

You are right, there are lots of Turkes in Long Newton, but I couldn't find your Sarah, although I searched from 1685 to 1710 in the PR.  There seem to have been two families around the right time in Long Newnton, or possibly one man, Thomas, with two wives, as I notice that his first bunch of children were with Elizabeth (Jane 1685, Thomas 1691 and John 1692), followed by children of Thomas and Anne - Jane 1694, William 1696, John 1698, Richard 1700, Anne 1701, Mary 1706 and twins Isaac and Rebecca 1709.  There is a member's submission (beware!) for a marriage of Thomas Turke and Elizabeth Moody in Long Newnton on 30 April 1685

I didn't find any Davies families in L.N. at all.

I'll  be in the RO again next week, if there is anything you want me to follow up.

Gillg,

Thanks so much for all your effort! I truly do appreciate it. I'm disappointed that Sarah is not in Long Newnton ( I felt confident that she would be found there!) , but I'll keep on looking for her. Perhaps she'll turn up in a parish whose records I'll find more accessible. :)

Thanks also for the info about the Davis family. Phillimore's Index recorded a Davis marriage in the time period in question. At least I know now that, that couple did not have children there.

Again, thanks so much for your help. I was really stuck as the RO couldn't even supply me with fiche of Long Newnton's PR's for my time period.  Root Chatters are the greatest!!!

Kind regards,

Donna

Just wish I could have helped more.  Keep up the search, and let me know if you want any more lookups.
