India: Birth (CLARKE) & Marriage (to SMITH) please??
« on: Saturday 12 September 09 18:41 BST (UK) »
Hi I'm really disappointed the person I was researching turns out to be wrong - and as its my Grandfather really annoyed with myself!! :( as now half of my tree is wrong!!!
I got his service papers back and it turns out he was born and married in India - can anyone help me find the details please??

Cyril Arthur Clarke born 18 June 1911 Kirkee Bombay Presidency India
Father English and Mother English so assuming they were in Army/Services??

he married Winifred Ann Smith on 29 April 1939 Bombay

If anyone could also tell me how I find the details to order the birth certs etc - would it have been registered in England??

Many thanks

Hi

Brittish Overseeas (including military and consular) BMDs are available in GRO indexes as the home ones but are not as easily available.  They can be found at the Nat ARchives and some pay to view sites. I know that FindMyPast has them but not sure of the other sites.

Regards

Added -when you've found the refs, they can be ordered in the same way  as home ones  from the GRO but you must specify 'Overseas' on the form

Go to BMDs and then select Overseas Births or Marriages

Put in broad date range and surname.

You then have to go through each index that comes up unless you know that it's military or marine, etc.

PS - make sure you look at the bottom of the pages for inserts. Some of them get very messy

If it's not on the GRO overseas indexes, I'm not sure where it could be  :-\   The Nat Archives listings would just be the indexes that you have access to.

Maybe, they didn't register him or it got missed off. Is the marriage not there either?

Saying that, I don't have some of my ancestors in Malaysia either  :(

Ohh its so frustrating - I did who I thought - got birth certs everything and then an ex wife of my uncle said "I swear they married in India"??? and it questioned everything I did so went and ordered the service docs and there it is in black and white!! Really cross with myself - should have check better but the service docs were £30 and trying to save money didnt work in the end!!
Problem is that all my family have since died and got no one left to ask!

I've double checked and the nearest that I can find for a birth is:

Cyril A Clark  (location marked out)  1907  A.S.C.C & T  Vol 637  Page 127 GRO Regimental Birth Index 1761-1924

Not having much luck with the marriages.
