Jones - murdered in Wapping

I am trying to find out details of the murder of Albert Jones in Wapping in the 1890s. He was appsarently involved with the union movement. His wife was Charlotte Churchyard.

I searched the Old Bailey trials but nothing came up for Albert Jones, Victim.

I looked at one or two sites too including Old Stepney http://website.lineone.net/~fight/Stepney/index.html
and Tower Hamlets online

Found one Albert Jones aged 11 in Whitechapel in 1851 but not living with the people mentioned in your other post.  This is the ref HO 107/1546 folio 165.  Hopefully Someone may look up the actual census for you.  If they don't after a week then ask again on the London Lookup Requests board quoting the ref number and name.

The 1861 census is a little bit confusing. It has John Jones as being 34 from Aberayron, Cardigan, his wife Mary (43) from Chelmsford and their children - the eldest of which was Albert (20). Which means that John was 14 when he became a father!

I assume that there is mistake!

There is a record for the marriage of a John Jones and Mary Ann Gillham at Bethnal Green in June 1841 - I am hoping that will give me some clues.

As far as the murder is concerned, as it was believed that it was connected with trade union activity I have now contacted the TUC and they have given me some possible avenues. I will keep everyone informed!

Hello again,

This record is on Free BMD too - Albert says he was born Hackney and when I work out his age it does seem he was born 1840.
You can order this cert too if you want to quoting Vol 3 page 133 that way you get both parents and G/fathers:

Did he have brothers William and George? They were both born Hackney and were general labourers like Albert.

I don't know about William and George. I have ordered the birth certificate for Albert - I'll keep you informed.

Can now confirm that there was a George and Henry - lived with parents at 2 Little Somerset Street in 1861. It was father Albert who came from Aberayron in Cardiganshire.

According to the website www.questia.com, there is a reference to an Albert Jones on p114 of a book called The Culture of Labourism: The East End between the Wars by John Marriot. It appears to be in chapter 3, entitled Trade Unions, Politics and Labour Representation. Unfortunately one has to subscribe (money) in order to view the pages.

There isn't a copy of the book at LMA library, and the copy at Guildhall library is marked "closed access". There is, however a copy at the British Library.  I would hate to send you on a wild goose chase, but it might be a lead if all else fails.

If you put this ref MEPO 20 in National Archives search it gives details of  Metropolitan Police: General Registry: Registers of Murders and Deaths by Violence
1891-1966  which are held at Kew.  Regards Jan
