Electoral role for Stoke, Coventry in 1940s or 1950s
« on: Thursday 10 September 09 11:14 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I have a photo of a little girl; on the back it says "Veronica, 3 and a half", the mother was Iris living at "37 Aldermoor Lane, Stoke, Coventry".  Iris was one of the 2 daughters of my great aunt May Louise (nee Hassell) and her husband John Harrison who married in 1913.  I would like to trace the family but do not know the married names of the daughters Iris and her sister.
One solution would be to find who lived at 37 Aldermoor Lane, Stoke when the photo was taken.  I estimate the 1940s or early 1950s.  Another photo shows a sister of Veronica, called "Patricia May aged 7 in 1948", no address clue for this photo but if Veronica and Patricia May were sisters and children of Iris, as I believe, then a search in the electoral role for that address would be logical.  Once I have a surname I can then go on to the next step of the search.

Thanks very much for any Coventry / Warwickshire searcher who has the time for this look-up.  I am happy to reciprocate with going to the London Met Archives or Hertfordshire Archives.

Iris was born in Coventry in 1917. She is Iris L Harrison.

An Iris L Harrison married a Walter H Burr June Q 1936 in Coventry.

There is also  a further marriage entry for an Iris L Burr or Harrison marrying an Alfred Beesley in March Q 1947, also at Coventry.  There is also a marriage for Walter Burr in 1952 I think in Coventry, so they possibly divorced after the war.

Interestingly, there is a birth record of a Patricia M Beesley born March Q 1942 in Shipston (on Stour), mother's maiden name Harrison.

There is a Veronica D Beesley but the mother's surname is Rudd. She was born December Q 1943, Solihull. Maybe a coincidence.

There is also a Wendy A Beesley born June Q 1949 Coventry, mother Harrison.

You could contact Coventry library for electoral records. They hold a reasonably complete set up to about 1970, and will photocopy addresses for you if you let them have details. I have done this myself with them and they are helpful. They might even do a free look up for you if it's just one address and one year.

Iris's sister - probably Violet M born June Q 1916.  Married a chap called Ralph T Owen Dec Q 1936 Coventry. There is a birth listed in Warwick for a Veronica with Harrison as mother's surname.

Hello Gemstone,

Thanks for making contact.  You say it is your family, so hello cousin!!  As to what I am looking for, I would like to find out a bit more about the daughters of Henry Harrison and his wife May Louise (nee Hassell, and my grandmother's sister), dates & places of birth and marriage for example.  A cousin (Pamela) of my father's has photos of John and May's daughter Iris and of 3 little girls, Patricia, Wendy and Veronica and it would be good to put them with the right parents.

Going forward it would be good to reestablish contact, especially with my cousin Pamela and her husband Brian who actually met Iris and her husband (various photos of picnics and beach scenes).  But I appreciate that after the decades it might appear a bit artificial.  I am sure Pamela and Brian would like an update on the wider family too.

It really depends on how you think of genealogy, but if you want I can give you all the Hassell forebears going back to the early 1800s and all the collateral lines with a fair bt of contextual information eg addresses, jobs etc.
If you know how to use the personal message system within rootschat (the scroll icon) then you and I can correspond with information that you might not want the world to see.   The moderator will be able to tell you how peronal messages work.

Thanks again for making contact - Richard (son of Donald Huggett, son of Walter Huggett and wife Florence, nee Hassell)
