George Ward married Anne Drury
« on: Thursday 10 September 09 08:42 BST (UK) »
George Ward born 1867 in Yorkshire (birth not registered until 30 Aug 1882)was deported back to England about 1918 soon after his wife Ann (nee Drury) burnt to death in Adelaide, Australia in 1918.

George's father was John Ward born 1842 in Yorkshire and mother was Elizabeth Hobman born abt 1845 probably from Leeds Yorkshire.
Ann's father was Tom Drury born 1851 in Yorkshire and mother was named Sarah Ely born 1851 in Yorkshire.

George and Ann Ward had a daughter named Adelaide May Ward born 11 May 1899 in Leeds and died 17 March 1966 in Adelaide South Australia. She  married Harold Ethelbert James Skinner in South Australia on 28 Aug 1918. It is believed her family disowned her for "marrying someone who wore a brown suit".
I think this may mean that Harold Skinner was a Puritan. Harold and Adelaide were my grandparents. any help please on George Ward and his family would be great.

George Ward born 1867 in Yorkshire (birth not registered until 30 Aug 1882)

Are you sure??? Seems extremely unlikely. Have you got the birth cert? What does that say about it?

Where does the info re Adelaide birth in Leeds come from? I cant see it in the indexes. There is an Adelaide Ward (no middle name) bn 1899 in York , and 1901 shows her as a daughter of an Annie Ward, married but no husband with her. (RG13 4336 140 22).

And there is a marriage with a George Ward and an Annie Drury on the same page in Oct/Nov/Dec 1898 in York

Hi there is a lot of mystery surrounding George Ward. he was my great grandfather and his daughter Adelaide was my grandmother.
i am only going on family information.
I believe he came to Australia without Anne his wife and daughter around the turn of the  century. They came out about 1909. Adelaide Ward was definately born 11 May 1899 in Yorkshire and died 17 march 1986 in Sth Aust.

Anne came to Aust with daughter Adelaide and they departed London to Sydney 15 May 1908 on Orient royal mail ship 'oroya'?
Anne commited suicide or was murdered by fire in 1916 (changed-now probably 1918)- Her husband George Ward was deported soon after.

She was living at Union St york at time of marraige.
1901 cencus has Anne Drury living at 13 Clifford St Leeds with daughter Adelaide .
I am pleased to see some help being given here. I am at my wits end with them

Hi,

Do you have George's marriage certificate?  If so what age does he claim to be?

If he was born in 1867 then it is unlikely that his birth was not registered until 1882; perhaps he was not baptised until 1882.    :-\

Adelaide Ward was definately born 11 May 1899 in Yorkshire

In Yorkshire - not necessarily Leeds?.

So the 1899 York birth looks as if it is her, and the 1901 Leeds census that I found also. But it seems you have that already. (Clifton Street, Leeds)

You mention an address at time of marriage - the marriage I found was in York Reg District - so the Union Street you refer is in York?

If you have the marriage cert it will give George's father's name and occuption, as well as George's occupation, all of which might help find George earlier. Also as Nanny Jan has mentioned, George's age.

I don't know if this is of any help, but the whole family travelled together to Australia in 1909 - details as above.  George is listed as a Sawyer.

Apologies Terri.  I should have quoted sailing details as per your reply No. 3
I looked up the details on Findmypast, which has Geo, Ann & Adelaide all listed as departing London for Sydney.
