Great Ouseburn. Surname ASKWITH
« on: Wednesday 09 September 09 12:35 BST (UK) »
Hi There......

Can anyone help ?

I have found on IGI, the baptism for JOHN ASKWITH 1813, and ELIZABETH ASKWITH 1815, which took place at Great Ouseburn, Parents were John and Hannah. I think Hannah's maiden name may have been Raynor.........

John jnr, emigrated to Canada in 1834, and we have his history from there. But we can't get any further back. ie where his father came from or his mother. There are no ASKWITHS at Great Ouseburn on the 1841 census. I suspect that John and Hannah may have died, and may be the reason John jnr emigrated......

I am helping his descendent in Vancouver BC.

Many Thanks

JeannieR

Hi Jeannie,

The Elizabeth Asquith/Askwith you mentioned is my ggg-grandmother who married William Steele.  I have information going forward in England on her line and am in contact with a cousin in Ottawa who has shared information going back for the Asquith/Askwith line.

Hope to hear from you.

Aloha,
Gail

My Gx3 grandfather was John Asquith who married Ellen Barnett at Bedale  (North Yorks) in Nov 1803, they had a daughter Eleanor born abt 1807.
Handed down family legend said that John was a sea captain and that there was a later family connection with Prime Minister H H Asquith although his family seems to be from West Yorks.. Did John originate from W Yorks??
Daughter Eleanor (my Gx2 grandmother) was brought up and privately educated by 2 maiden aunts, she married John Pearson against the wishes of the aunts as they said he was just after her money! I have a full record going forward re Eleanor but have been unable to track anything going back for her parents John and Ellen Asquith, no baptism or death. Do you think any of this has connections to your Asquith tree? I am at a great big brick wall now. Thanks for reading this.

Thank you - I'm grateful for all the help I can get on this, I'm sure they can't disappear totally, somewhere or someone will have some knowledge. Maybe a session with a regression therapist might be the only way! Thanks again. SS

geniewhoami,

This John Askwith emmigrated to Canada abt 1830 and eventually settled in Ottawa, Ontario where he became a city magistrate.

His sister, Elizabeth married William Steele from Harrogate and settled in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

Jeannie, thanks for following up on this for us.

Aloha
