Searching census info
« on: Tuesday 08 September 09 21:19 BST (UK) »
Sorry if I am being a bit thick, but is there a way of searcing the census by address rather than name? I am having no luck searching by name as it seems a fairly common name, but have got the address off the marriage certificate. I have tried a few sites, but they all appear name driven. Any advice would be appreciated.

Any help you could offer would be great. I have a marriage certificate dated 8.8.1891 for George Richard Davis and Ellenor Cramman, age 21 & 24 respectively. George's father is listed as ' George Davis, Gentleman'. George Richard Davis' address is listed as 32 Bedford Street, Tynemouth.
I have also found George Richard Davis and Ellenor (Ellen) and their children on the 1901 census, at 10-11 Clive Street, North Shields, age 30 & 33, which ties in with the ages on the marriage certificate. George Richard Davis' place of birth is 'London'.
I have been trying to find his birth certificate, or failing that, him living with his parents on an earlier census, but have had no joy.
I have found several birth certificates for George Davis' in London for 1871, and have tried to cross-reference them with the census for that year, to avoid having to order loads of them. I have found them all on the censuses, but none with a dad called George Davis. Similarly, I have found lots of other George Davis' on the censuses, but again none with a dad called George Davis. I feel like I have hit a brick wall!!! I hope this is not too rambling - it would have helped if the dad had chosen a different name for his son!!

Who are the witnesses to this marriage- they can often be siblings or neighbours who can be useful to provide clues.

Have you discounted this family in 1871? It contains a George Davis father and George R. Davis son, of approx. the correct age.

What was George Richard's occupation on his marriage certificate?
