Hello Carolyn,
Just read about your Angus McEachern being from the Oa.
There is an Ann McLean who died in the Oa in 1862 and her spouse
is given as Angus McEachern.  If this is the right Ann then her parents
are given as John McLean and Christine Taylor.
This info is listed on the Ted Larson site on Islay  at
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~steve/islay/data.htm
This is well worth a look as it covers births deaths and marriages on Islay.
Islay's population reached around 14 to 15000 in the 1830's.
By 1880 was 7500 and is now under 3500.
I'll be offline for a week as I'm off to Islay tomorrow.

Have you checked name alternatives
MLean = McLergan
Brown = McCore (sometimes but I haven't seen it on Islay)

Thank you,Sue,for that tip. No,I haven't searched for name alternatives - all this gets very complicated to the inexperienced! The Brown/McCore names are very different from one another,aren't they? I have just returned from three weeks' holiday,and shall get busy continuing my searches in the next couple of days. Thank you for taking the time to have an interest in my puzzle! Best wishes,Islay.
