Joseph WALLEN & Wife Ethel nee (KNILL)
« on: Sunday 06 September 09 06:25 BST (UK) »
Greetings

I am seeking any information possible as to ancestry of my paternal grandfather, Joseph Wallen and his wife Ethel (Nee Knill)

My elder brother before he passed away was able to trace the following that I now provide below, anything more than that will be a much appreciated bonus, so that I may pass onto my nieces a few links re their family tree now that they themselves are having children.

Henry James Wallen (my great grandfather) was born in 1848 (I think - place unknown) He married Sarah (nee Holt) and they lived at 146 South Street, Bishop Stortford, when they lived there or at Much Haddam, they had their first son, James Henry.

James Henry was born on 13th November 1892, christened at Much Haddam 1st January 1893. He is believed to have died from influenza, in Italy, and was buried at Staglieno Cemetery, Genoa.

Their next son was Joseph Wallen (My grandfather) born 30 November 1894, Christened at Much Haddam 6th January 1895.
Joseph married Ethel (nee Knill), they had two sons Kenneth James Wallen (my father) and Peter John Knill Wallen. Unfortunately my father got married in 1940, against his parents wishes, and lost contact with his family, but do know that his father was a Policeman with the Hertfordshire Constabulary.

Then Henry James Wallen had Hannah, born 4th May 1897, again christened at Much Haddam 4th July 1897.

Then Henry James had Fred, born 4th November 1904. Fred was killed in WWII, on 23rd August 1941, in submarine P32, in the Mediterranean, hit a mine. Remembered at Chatham Naval Memorial.

The above is all pretty well confirmed, so any information on Henry James Wallen and or his wife Sarah would be most appreciated as would following my paternal grandmothers lineage Ethel Wallen (nee Knill).

As I am now the last living aged member of my family I would like to pass on some family history to my nieces as they are all now having children. All or any information gratefully received,

Thanking You in anticipation
Regards
Ken

Roma,

You are amazing , and so prompt. i didn't expect a reply for ages, certainly not on a Sunday morning (Your time - I'm actually residing in Thailand now after living in Australia for 40 years following emigration from the U.K.)

I had heard that earlier quick checks by my brother some 10 years ago that he got stuck when he realised the different spelling of our family name "Wallen" and because he was living in Australia, found it took difficult to go further due to time constraints & the tyranny of distance.
But from what you've researched so far it does all seem to dovetail.

Thank you for what you have unearthed already and anything I find out from here will be a bonus. It's the best birthday present I could receive right now as I celebrate my 62nd birthday today.

Cheers & & Kind Regards

Ken

Happy Birthday Ken

Found James on 1841 Census together with a Francis who I would assume was his brother, entry as follows:

HO107/443 F 34 P 35

Francis WALLING aged 25 b Hertfordshire  Ag Lab (Agricultural Labourer)
James WALLING aged 20 b Hertfordshire   Ag Lab

No sign of parents.

Also this could be James christening from IGI:
JAMES WALLYN  01 FEB 1818   Much Hadham, Hertfordfordshire
Parents: PHILIP WALLYN and  MARY

His brother Francis WALLIN who is with him on 1941 Census christened at Much Hadham 16 April 1815 same parents shown.

By the way the ages shown on 1841 census are rounded down to nearest 5 years.

Regards
Robert
