Yes Berlin- bob,
That is what I mean; i wasn't aware that East Germany destroyed all that data.  much of it must have been very incriminating, for the ordinary person.  I wonder what happened to all my family's documents? all thier "passes" etc.  In theory i don't exist because my father sneaked me across the border after the war .... and i'm finding it hard to establish where they all came from -   thus my interest in family history and genealogy.
