Hiya Julie et al,

you seem to be on the right track now. For sake of exclusion, here is some more data on the Alexanderina you note, you wrote;

Quote
ALEXANDRINA MACDONALD 1820 Lochbroom, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland to William MCDONALD and Jane Matheson Bapt on 31 July 1820...

I have a copy of that page, only the father is noted, resident at Dornie in Coigach. The family later emigrated to Cape Breton, where the father was known as "Big William the Pioneer" and there are many descendants. His wife was Johanna MacKenzie,  daughter of John McKenzie, VI of Ballone, and Anne MacKenzie. That Alexanderina died 1920 at Mount Florence, Coxheath, Cape Breton, N.S.

Hi Don  :)

Were those Macdonalds related to old Telfer of Polglass/Badenscallie who went to Australia and then came back (died 1980s)?  or did the whole family emigrate to Canada?

accckkkk.... closer I get to the present, fuzzier I get, "Telford" not in the records I have...

Big William was the last I know of the Dornie MacDs, descendants say he was from Letters in Lochbroom, but looks to me he was in the 1798 Militia List there, with father Murdo...

Also then at Dornie were a father and son John MacDonald, quite likely the father John a brother of Murdo. Only 33 of the 560 listees in 1798 were MacDs, so quite a wee cluster.

Very good chance the MacDonald family at Badenscallie descended from the two 1798 Johns at Dornie...

Hi Donald and Gadget

Thanks for all the extra info, you guys certainly know your stuff about the other MacD's. I'm not very good at Scottish history only a wee southerner (from Yorkshire) with some Scottish ancestors from Dysart/Gallatown.  I'm still trying to work out where my ancestors fit in with the Bonallie/Impey papers and "the undertakers" on my side of the family, so hope I'm not opening up some clan warfare by coming from the wrong side here :)

I'll amend hubby's tree and I know a few Nellis descendants who will be interested to have the right info on Alexandrina now that we know we are looking at Rogart and not Lochbroom.

Julie

One of the best ways of confirming you have the right details for Alexandrina would be for one of you to look at the death entry in 1865  :) Scottish death certs are more informative that English certs and will include, if known to the informant, spouse's details and full names of the deceased parents including mother's maiden name.

Images of BMDs, and original census imges,  are available to view on line at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. A minimum purchase of 30 units (£6) will let you view up to 6 images whch is excellent value. If you are only looking to get Alexandrina's death cert, you could register free with Scotlands People and then take advantage of the promotion with www.ancestralscotland.com/signup/register/ which is offering 10 free Scotlands People units, enough really to look at one image  :) You can save the image on your computer and print off as required.

Hi Monica

Thanks for the info, will give it a go when I get a chance.

Just noticed you have Moran's in your names at the bottom, one of hubby's many great gran's was a Mary Moran/Moren c1807 in Ireland married a Lawrence Gallaher 3 June 1833 in St Michaels' Ashton under Lyne, so maybe somewhere down the line you are distantly related.
