Hi

Have you checked SP for a possible re-marriage for Alexandrina? She was only 30 in 1851

I've had a look again on Ancestry tonight and not found anything, interestingly enough I was tempted to put this query under Yorkshire as her daughter Jane moved to Pickering sometime before 1870 and married John Nellis, and from then on Jane appears in the Pickering census returns but no sign of her mum living with them,

There is a clue from a GR member who had Ann aged 9 in 1861 and by her marriage in 1875 to Christopher Garton in Pickering she was 22 Moved to Pickering to join older sister Jane. Appears in 1871 as 17, living with sister Jane (Nellis),39, in Pickering. so perhaps Mum could have followed.  I've not found Ann in 1861 but the jump from being aged 9 to 22 in 10 years seems quite a gap.

But have you checked SP for a re-marriage or even possibly a death for her between 1851-1861??

Without that info - you could waste a lot of time searching both English and Scottish censuses for her

Hi Julie and Carole

Julie, Alexandrina and family are showing in Fearn for 1861:

Alexanderina Mitchell 38, pauper b. Rogart, Sutherlandshire
Alexander Mitchell 16, lab. b. Fearn
Jess Mitchell 11 b. Fearn
Ann Mitchell 9 b.Tain

Address: Blacktown, Fearn

Assuming you have verified the children for Hector and Alexandrina, her birth place in 1861 shows differently to what you have. From the above entry in 1861, there is this possible birth entry showing on IGI:

ALEXANDERINA MACDONALD Birth: 17 NOV 1822/ Christening: 19 NOV 1822  Rogart, Sutherland,
Parents: ALEXANDER MACDONALD and JANE SUTHERLAND

Alexandrina is also showing as born in Rogart Sutherland in her 1851 census entry with Hector and family. A likely death for her in Fearn in 1865.

Hi Monica

Thanks for that.   I was looking for a Lochbroom Ross & Cromarty birthplace which is why I could not find her in 1861

We got there Carole  :)

Julie, I think your data sources might need to be checked for the family. From what your GR source said re Ann Mitchell, she is down in Pickering but working at the Atkinson household as a domestic servant - RG10; Piece: 4841; Folio: 13; Page: 20

Added: You said you have access to Ancestry. Have you checked the member family trees? There are lots for this family of Hector and Alexandrina some including photos.

Hi Monica and Carole

Many thanks both of you.  I  only have limited access to Ancestry records when I use the library version unfortunately I haven't got an Ancestry subscription at home only the free membership.  Will check out the info when I'm next in the library.

When I first started on hubby's side of the family I remember the alternate birth for Alexandrina, but other GR members had her down as Lochbroom so I thought I must be wrong.  I didn't have her details from the 1851 Census showing birthplace wish I had done before it would have made the pieces fit much better in this family tree puzzle.   the 1861 census does seem to confirm her birthplace as Rogart, so thank you for that I'm so glad I have a chance to check out the original family I had for her before printing all his family tree info out.

I've been collecting the scanned images while in the library of the census returns, done most of mine just starting on hubbys that's why I thought before I go looking for them and see if I can find any missing details, birthplaces, occupations etc I'll check out these last few problem families where they seem to have disappeared into thin air.

Many thanks for all your help it is appreciated.

Julie
