Peter L JOHNSON b 1903 Whitehaven
« on: Friday 04 September 09 08:40 BST (UK) »
Can anyone with an interest in the JOHNSON family history tell me any more about a Peter L Johnson, b 1903 in Whitehaven.  The Peter Johnson I am trying to locate grew up to be an engineer, probably in mining.

Many thanks for reading this message.

Do you know his father's name?

I've got a 1901 Cumberland Directory, but he won't be in it.

His father wil..

Best wishes

Hi CarolW

As a new person to this site, can I just ask if there is any objection to me posting a similar question onto boards of various counties?  It's been suggested that I try all the census entries which I shall do.

Hi

Duplicated posts on different boards can result in duplicated efforts by Rootchat volunteers.

Somebody can see your post on one board and be unaware of the other posts.  They then look up birth/census entries unaware that the same info is also being posted on other boards.

With respect - you are really on what we call a "fishing trip".  You are looking at all the Peter Johnson entries on freebmd that fall within your possible birthyear scale - 1895-1910 - and then posting requests for info on the boards for those birth counties

I'm sorry - but this serves no useful purpose given that you have virtually no firm info about him apart from his adult occupation and a possibility that one of his parents was Irish and the other English.

I've just posted the following reply on one of your other posts

Quote
One of the major problems I can see here is that with so little info - you would not be able to identify him from any available census  or birth entry as you do not know either of his parents names and it is only a possibility that one was Irish and the other English

The span given for his birthyears on previous posts is anything from 1895-1910 and with a surname like Johnson - it's virtually impossible

You say he played a significant part in the history of your family.  Is there no marriage cert that would at least confirm his age and fathers name?

If not - perhaps you may find some info on the electoral roll you mention in your Essex post which may help to trace him further

Good luck

Hi CarolW,

Thanks once again for your comments re my Peter Johnson posts.  I would just like to point out to you and to any other people who read my posts that I am asking for help in this search because I have so little information.  Finding some information about this person would make a huge and positive difference to my life and to the life of several other people in my immediate family.  It is precisely because I have so little information that I am trying the wider family history research community for help.

I would also like to point out that I am immensely respectful of anyone who does volunteer searches either for myself or for others and I always say thank you.  I have looked up things for people in contexts other than this site (I am new to this site) and would happily do so again.  I also work as a volunteer in another professional context, which I do, as I presume other volunteers do, because they wish to do so.   :)

Many thanks to Geoff-E and to emmsheight for your input.  You might have read the other comments re my post.  I've made a note of the Johnson family you've listed Geoff-E in case it fits in with my jigsaw later on.  Quite apart from the fact that there are a lot of Peter Johnsons I still have a picture in my mind's eye of Whitehaven even though I've only been there once some years ago.  It's an amazing part of our landscape and heritage.  I hope to go there again before too long as we're planning a trip in that direction.  :)

Hi

Trying to think of ideas :-\, have you thought of trying some of the mining organisations?

As he probably isn't alive now, if he appears on a roll, depending how easy theirs are to search, they could probably release the details.  I'm just trying to think how to tackle the problem from both ends, if you like.

Best wishes
