I think there are some archives at the Railway Technical Centre but Iam not certain, my Dad works there so I will ask him to see what he can find out for you.

The Railway Technical Centre does have archives but only for the Loco works not the Carriage & Wagon Works.
Maybe there are archives at the companies that took over the Carriage site when BR was privatised?

There is a book called "Derby in Old Photographs" by David Buxton printed in collaboration with Derbyshire County Council in 1992, that you would find interesting as it includes a few old photograpsh of the Midland Railway's Carriage and Waggon Works on pages 146 - 148.  Apparently it took forty days total construction time for a carriage to be produced from start to finish including interior fittings and painting.  One of my grandfathers also worked at the Carriage and Wagon works, the Works employed many local men.  You should be able to request a loan of this book through your local library.

Failing that, contact the Derby Local Studies Centre, who request you to email them to "ask a question" about Derby's past history.   The contact website address is:-

Many thanks to you all for some very interesting sites. My main interest however is in names of people who worked there. I know where to find that sort of thing for the GWR and imagine somewhere there must be similar material for the DC&WW giving details of apprentices etc.

Hi Toby,
what years are you looking into?
alot of my family worked there,my uncle has written a book on his time there man & boy,and i know my brother has some old  group photos of the apprentices.

Hi Ken,
An Alfred Joseph Ellis born Cardiff 3/12/1862 married an Agnes Cartwright in Derby on 1/2/1887. Alfred served an apprenticeship in GWR Swindon carriage building. He had a son Bertram Joseph born 1889 in Derby.  I think that father and son may well have worked in the Derby rly. Workshops some time after 1910  but that is all I know.
