Hello William,

Welcome to Rootschat!

According to the 1901 Census ......

Living at Killearn Lodge, Killearn

Robert McNicol, Head, Gardener (Domestic Servant), age 37, born Killearn
Jemima McNicol, wife, age 37, born Edinburgh
Children:
Grace McNicol age 6, born Govan
Robert McNicol, age 3, born Glasgow
Mary F. McNicol, age 1, born Killearn

(no sign of your dad, so was he the youngest?)

Going back to the 1891 Census, this looks like it's Robert

Living at Dougalston Gardener's Bothy in New Kilpatrick.

Robert McNicol, age 27, Assistant Gardener, born Hellearn (obviously Killearn!)  ;D
and James Bell, age 22 born in Dalkeith, aslo an Assistant Gardener

Going back to the 1881 Census finds Robert with his parents

Living at Kirkhouse, Killearn

James McNicol, Head, Shoemaker, age 63, born Killearn
Mary McNicol, wife, age 63, born Killearn
Robert McNicol, son, Baker, age 17, born Killearn
John McNicol, grandson, Shop Boy (Grocer) age 14, born Killearn
Mary Bell, grand-daughter, Scholar, age 11, born Killearn
John Munro,, Boarder, Shoemaker, age 61, born Rutherglen

Robert and Mary obviously had much older children than Robert if these details are correct. A son (whose son young John the Shop Boy's father was) and a daughter who married a Bell (whose daughter was the above Mary aged 11)

I'm not having much luck finding Robert in 1871 or his father in 1861, but I'll keep looking.

Anne

Still haven't had any luck in 1861/71, but here's the family in 1851:

Living in Killearn

James McNicol, Head, Shoemaker, Emp??, age 33, born Killearn
Mary McNicol, wife, Housewife, age 27, born Killearn
Children:
Janes, son, scholar, age 8 (Probably James), born St. ??, Stirlingshire (Possibly St. Ninians?)
Agnes, daughter, scholar, age 6, born St. ??, Stirlingshire (Possibly St. Ninians?)
Mary, daughter, age 2, born St. ??, Stirlingshire (Possibly St. Ninians?)
Srecko?? McNicol, age 1, born Wattslan?, Stirlingshire

I thinkyou'll have to purchase the image from Scotland's People to see what 'Srecko' and 'Wattslan' really are!!

Anne

P.S.

Here's me rabbiting on about Census Returns which wasn't your question!

Killearn Cemetery is under Stirling Council who are usually very good at helping find burial places withing their cemeteries. The following is a link to their website:

Good Luck!

Thanks, Anne,
All that is a great help!
Yes, my father WAS the youngest - he was born in 1906.
However, it was a real surprise to me to learn that my father had another sister, Mary born about 1900!
I never knew anything about this - although I do have an old photo of my father and his brother Robert at Killearn School and there is Mary Mc Nicol in the photo but no sign of Grace. I though perhaps that there had been a mistake and that Mary was Grace.
I knew my uncle Robert and Aunt Grace well, but did not know about Mary.
Perhaps Grace attended another school??

Regarding " Pauls of Killearn" .  John William Paul  (jr). (born 19/12/1859)
John William Paul  (jr) was my great grandfather.  He immigrated to Quebec, Canada in 1883.  Married, Anne Jane McIntrye (born Donegal, Ireland) December 8, 1897 @ Montreal, Quebec.  ((worked for 'Uncle Walter'? as grocery clerk? livery?).   Moved across the Canadian prairies to Turner Valley, Alberta (Calgary).   Worked as rancher/with s horse.  Had daughter - Minnie Paul, son Ernest Paul (deceased at young age in horse accident),  daughter Hazel Paul,  son Stanley Charles Paul (my grandfather).  John William Paul deceased 19___49? Creston, British Columbia.  To our knowledge John William Paul worked with horses but did not develop the black pea.  I am looking for i) other Pauls of Killearn ? UK? Are there any Pauls still in Killearn?  ii) information about the Drumbeg farm, iii) lineage re: John Paul senior in Killearn, iv) information regarding 'Walter' Paul of Montreal etc.  Planning to travel to UK/Killearn at some point.  Any information at all re: Pauls of  Killearn greatly appreciated.
