Hi Barbara,

I think you are right.  It appears that 1873 is right.  Her marriage certificate is wrong then! I will have a go and order that one.

Thank you so much for your help.  I will let you know how I get on!

Maybe it's just a genuine mistake, though she wouldn't be the first to give an incorrect age on a certificate!  My husband's grandmother was 'full age' eg over 21 on hers, but we know she was only 17, and I've seen others where the husband seemed to lose 10 years, maybe because he was marrying someone much younger

Do check details before you part with your cash though, and look forward to hearing if it was the right one

Hi Emma,

Don't apologise, it can get a bit confusing when you're just starting out.  If we don't get the information we'd like, we just ask you for more!

Think we've sorted Elizabeth's birth on the other thread, haven't we?  A possible mistake on the marriage cert - so born c1873 not 1877 and you say you're  sending for the birth cert.
 :)

Still looking for possible death dates for the others
Kind regards
Barbara

Thanks Andrea  :)

Hi Emma,

How do I look at GRO death index.  I assume that I do so on ancestry?

Sorry I missed this question earlier.  Yes the full GRO index is on ancestry if you have a subscription, and on findmypast - pay-to-view or subscription.  You should also be able to look at it free at your local main library.  Freebmd is free, but not quite complete yet.

1891 census shows Henrietta as a widow, and youngest son aged 4, so at least you know that Robert Johnson died between 1886 & 1891

I think this is probably Robert's death registration, the age and district fits
Jun 1890  Weardale    10a   162   JOHNSON  Robert aged  43

and Henrietta's death reg:
Mar 1902  Weardale  10a  168  JOHNSON  Henrietta aged 50

Dec 1887 Weardale    10a   154   JACKSON    John Wren V   aged  81

Jun 1888  Weardale    10a   150   JACKSON    Dorothy   aged 72

Wow!

Thank you Barbara.

I have noted all those and will order certificates when funds allow!  On maternity at the moment so I have to pace myself!  I get so impatient though.

Will keep you posted on the Elizabeth front!  :-\

Oh and forgot to say looked at Elizabeth on the 1901 census when she was married to James Wilson and her age then makes her born in 1875!!

That is now three conflicting dates, do you still think that I should go for 1873?

Hi Emma,

The birth reg I gave you for 1872 is the only one in that area that fits. Lots of census and certificate ages can be misleading, depending on who gave the information :)

Here are all the Weardale baptisms:

Sep 1870 Weardale 10a   291  Johnson    Elizabeth         too early
Dec 1872  Weardale  10a 329  JOHNSON  Elizabeth   best guess!
Sep 1873 Weardale    10a   364    Johnson    Elizabeth Ann    a possible but yours doesn't seem to have middle name Ann?
Jun 1878   Weardale  10a 322  JOHNSON  Elizabeth Annie  too late and not right parents as I found out earlier

If you contact Durham Registrars on the link I gave you, and tell them what you need and who her parents were, they should be able to confirm which is correct

You could always check with the local registrar for parents' names before buying the certificate, they usually will do that free if you are buying the cert.
You can order this one online from the Durham County website at http://www.rootschat.com/links/070p/ or download the application form and mark your query on it if not sure if it's the right one, and post it to them.

The Anglican church in Wolsingham is this one, where the baptisms you have took place, so maybe where they were all buried:
http://www.keystothepast.info/durhamcc/K2P.nsf/K2PDetail?readform&PRN=D14349

and burial records are at Durham County Record Office:
