South Shields, Durham, England
« on: Wednesday 02 September 09 15:11 BST (UK) »
I am wondering if there is a North and a South Shields.  I have an ancestor who is from South Shields.  I might have found another ancestor who is listed in a census in the United States in 1882 as being originally from North Shields.  Does such a place exist or is this a mistake on the census?  I can't find anything that says that there is a North Shields in the 1880s.  I would appreciate any help that any one has.

North Shields is north of the Tyne and South Shields is south of the Tyne. South Shields may be Durham (county) but North Shields will be Northumberland. They are joined by a ferry and nowdays a tunnel!

HI  :D

There certainly is a place called North Shields, it is on the northern side of the River Tyne (opposite South Shields) and it is in Northumberland (as Stan told you a few days ago http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,402382.msg2715798.html#msg2715798 )

See http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=435500&Y=568500&A=Y&Z=120

North Shields formerly fell within the Tynemouth Registration District, and you can find more information about it here http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/Tynemouth/index.html

You will also find more if you have a look at some of the sources of information which were suggested to you in this thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,402382.msg2715775.html#msg2715775

Hope this helps  :)

Thanks for the help.  It is hard to navigate my way around a county that I know nothing about.  Sorry to have to ask twice about the same subject.

I am looking for a man named John Scott born about 1840 and his wife maybe the following year (Sarah Watson).  They came to the US on a ship with Mormons called "John Bright".  The information here is confusing because obviously the whole names of cites, etc. in England are not correct.  If you know of anything, I would appreciate it.  If I can help with anything you are searching for, just ask.

When did they travel to the US?

Were they already married when they arrived?

What exactly does the census you refer to give as their birthplaces?

(Just trying to narrow things down a bit)

The census says "Shields, Durham, England" for John born Nov 3, 1840.  He married Sarah before they came to the US. March 5, 1865 at St. John's Church in Lancashire, England.  They come to the US right after that and arrive here in June 1865.  They were one of many English who converted and sailed with a huge group of Mormons.  The census for them some times says South Shields and sometimes just Shields.  I have also found who I think might be a father or grandfather to John in the US but for North Shields as his birthplace.  I haven't a clue.  While the census here can be good, they can be very confusing.  I have the family in Illinois - it is trying to place them back in England where we are having such a hard time.

Have you got the marriage certificate which should give his father's name? This will make him easier to find in the earlier censuses.
