RASC 528th Regiment

Hey, ive been following my great granfather, Harold Entwistle's career in the war and ive hit a snag. I know he served in Belgium, Germany and Holland in the RASC. His record states that he was attached to the 528th Infantry Unit as a blacksmith but his record doesnt state any towns he served in or any battles he may have been a part of. Does anybody know how i can possibly get a record of the units movements between October 1944 and December 1945 or how i may get a look at any war diaries that exist. Thanks for your time,

Hi guys. Just came across this post. I'm the "author" of both the website and book on 221 Transport Squadron in which I have served with for over 30 years. Please feel free to pick my brain in relation to your grandfather's war trail whilst serving with 528 squadron.

If he returns, perhaps he could tell us his relatives date of birth and Army serial number, if known?

John, many thanks for your reply. Harold Entwistle born 09.11.1907 was my great grandfather. During WWII he was attached to the RASC 528th Regiment as a blacksmith.

For the past 10 or so years i've been hoping to follow his movements during the war on a trip with my father and grandfather who both share his name. Sadly my grandfather passed away a few weeks ago but i would still very much like to know more of the movements of the regiment in order to make the trip one day in my grandfather and great grandfathers memory.

Other than the basics of his military record i have been unable to establish anything else about his service with the regiment. Any information at all would be greatly appreciated.

All the locations his unit visited will be in the unit war diaries, they give a day by day account of what the unit was doing and where.

Just two points worth mentioning in pervious posts. RASC units would be a Company rather than a regiment and it's Army Service Number rather than serial number - I certainly wasn't barcoded during my ten years service lol

Here's the diary refs at the National Archives in London:

WO 171/2486 528 Company 1944 Jan-May, Oct-Dec
WO 171/6306 528 Company 1945 Jan-Dec
WO 171/9837 528 Company 1946 Jan-Jul

Do you know when he joined up? This unit was either formed in 1943 or was re-named at the back end of 1942/beginning of 1943 by the looks of it.
